I had posted some time back on how to fix your LionChief remote, if the wheel gets turned too far it can very easily break off the the tiny plastic tabs inside and spin freely with no control of your train speed. Very easy to break especially with kids. And some photos of how I have it set up for shows with controls mounted on a board and metal brackets to keep the knob from being turned to far.
Here is the repair link when your control gets broken. It will break very easily if you let a few kids use it;

Our local train club members found an easy way to lessen the chance of this happening. The remote is handed to kids at shows that allow them to run Thomas.
They simply super glued on a couple of pieces of hard plexiglass or you could use any thick hard plastic; it is glued onto the Speed control knob with tabs sticking down at the ends so the dial cannot be turned past the bell and whistle buttons. This does not allow the kids to turn the speed control too far and break it and also limits the speed a bit so train is more likely to stay on the track.
Here is a mock up of how it might look. You need to place one on each side and could drill holes through the knob and brackets to better secure it so it does not get broken off.
If running at a show even with supervision kids can be pretty rough with a remote. With the delay feature by Lionel it confuses kids even when you tell them there will be delay between turning the speed control and the train running. Kids are used to instant response from RC and video game controllers not waiting!
A simple addition like this can save you an hour in repairs if they break it!
