New one on me. Not a new bug, just decided it is time to fix it. I CANNOT edit the name of this engine.

Here are the circumstances:

Engine in question is Budd Car 30-2388-1, cab 6201

I wanted station stops in this engine but it never came with station stops.

Tried way back to put station stop sound file into the original BUDD board without luck.

Bought a damaged trolley with station stops cheap. Took out the Budd boards, used them successfully in another engine repair.

Put the station stop boards into the Budd Car. It is a 2mb board.

Loaded the sound file I wanted, actually tried two different ones and walla! I had station stops.

NOW the issue. I cannot edit the name of the Budd. No matter whatever I try when I hit the 'D' for finished, it comes up with ENGINE NOT ON TRACK, CHECK ENGINE.

I have tried.

2 different sound files.

Factory reset

Deleting engine, always finds back the trolley.Street Car PCC Boston
30-5120.
#3274

Where is this name embedded where I cannot get it changed.

Any and all ideas welcome.

From The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition, page 39:

Initially, a PS2 engine's name is entered into a PS2 engine at its time of manufacture and

resides in the PS2 engine itself as the Factory Name. When the name is changed, a Custom Name is created and the Factory Name no longer is used, although it remains in the engine. Changing the name of a PS2 engine by creating a Custom Name changes it in the engine and in the DCS Remote in which the change was made. Changing the Factory Name in a PS2 engine may only be accomplished using the Dealer Loader Program. PS2 subways and trolleys may not have a Custom Name.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Thank you Barry!

I was not clear in my description. I was referring to editing the name in the handheld and not permanently on the board.

I guess your last sentence is the answer for permanent board changes or is it also for handheld name changes?  I was using dealer loader.

It would still be a curiosity question as to why 'technically' not?

I have been editing names in handheld for all other boards since day 1. I never tied a subway though. I will and I did.

Can't change handheld either. Learn something new everyday!

Thanks

Hugh,

No you were plenty clear, however, you need to reread my post.

The Custom Name is the one that is entered via the remote, and that is the one that cannot be changed.

Every PS2 board can have its Factory name changed via the DCS Service Loader Program.

John,

I wonder what the reasoning is?

I believe that it has something to do with the memory where the Custom Name goes is instead used by the transit station announcements.

Keep in mind that, in the PS2 5 volt world, these boards are flashed differently than are the standard 5 volt boards. The same goes for the articulated engines due to their dual chuff rates.

Yep, I replaced the 5V board with the 3V, and the 5V was a FLASH board, the 3V was just the regular board.  Jeff told me they put a lot of the logic for many products into the ROM on the 3V board so they didn't need the FLASH except for some of the newer products like operating pantographs.

I have build an articulated engine with the standard 3V board, and there was no issue with the sound file.  I converted a RK Cab Forward, and I used the Premier Cab-Forward file.  Works and sounds great.

The expanded memory of the 3V allows the Steam/Diesel, Articulate, and SS Flash to be loaded in the AE-10 and AE-15.

The 1 meg boards seem to load 9 or 10 sectors depending on the file size being loaded.  Ran into one board that would not load a specific file that required 10 sectors, but loaded a different file that only required 9.

What is funny is that some of those SS files are small compared to other diesels.  680K versus 800 to 900K.  G
