I was up to the museum Friday and the crew from the UK was busy getting her ready
for her trip. They are putting the engine and tender on flat cars and sending them to
Halifax, NS., where they will be joined by another engine from Canada and shipped to the York museum in the UK.
Not too happy about the museum doing this. I hope we get it back.

Bet they trade it for a P-40 Warhawk or something.

Oh it will come back, with new paint! It's going over for the 75th Anniversary of Mallard's record-breaking run, in a reunion of all 6 preserved A4's. As part of the deal, it's getting cosmetically renewed by NRM while in the UK.

I was also there Friday, small world. They said there are actually 5 of these trains and they will all be there. I guess the color that has been on display was a couple of shades off.

Actually, there are 6: Dwight D Eisenhower, Dominion of Canada, Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley, Union of South Africa, and Bittern. And Mallard was the locomotive who's color was off. The Garter Blue which it wore (until a few days ago), was a few shades too dark. It is currently being repainted to the proper color.
They did pose Mallard outside yesterday in black primer, and it does look quite nice in Black....

I must have misunderstood the person at the museum. He meant five others in addition to Eisenhower. I have to admit, I'm not very well versed in non North American trains.
Now if you ask me about Big Boys...

Isnt that the fighter being restored in Reading, Pa. thought that was the only one
in existence
Perhaps the only one capable of flying, seem them in several museums including one here locally

REALLY !?!
I am sure they just gave it to the British museum and said return it if you want to. Kind of like the entire Lend/Lease thing we did with them during WW2. Those Brits hardly returned anything they borrowed
If you read the article, not only are they getting it back, the museum in Britain is restoring it (I assume cosmetic only)
Chris
thanks for the info
Reading WWII days first weekend in June is well worth the attendance cost.

We'll probably spend the two years it is here faithfully building an exact working copy and send that back and we keep the original.

No. The plane being restored in Reading is a P-61 Black Widow, of which there are only 4 airframes left in existance. The Reading P-61 was recovered from on top of a mountain in the Phillippines where it had crashed during WWII. Google MAAM and then look for Black Widow restoration story if you want all the details. BTW, when they are done with this restoration, it WILL FLY!
Having said all that, if you get the opportunity, DO go to the Reading WWII weekend, which is held the first weekend in June. Our very own Forumite, TedsGG1, is one of the show PA announcers. It is a great place to experience all things WWII.

lehighline...Teds GG1 was AWOL at the Reading Show this past June. Otherwise was possibly the best show in years. We always have a great time. Friday is the best day, I think, to go as you can see the warbirds arriving AND go up in one for rides!
This year, it was myself, HO Bob and Corsair29...POW was an escapee friend of HO Bob and the New Guy was Corsair 29's brother.
Spent a bit of time at the Russian encampment...they cook realistically!
Thanks.

Walt,
Ted was there. You just missed him. He was way too busy having fun!
Here is Ted with his baby on Sunday.
Here is a shot of me, my son, and my nephew. This was my nephew's first visit to the show. I think he was a bit overwhelmed. He ended up with a sore neck, from not knowing which way to look. One heck of a lot to see! Just as bad as walking the aisles at York.

I thought so!!!

Actually, if they built a working replica, a la "Tornado", and sent that back, and kept the #60008 for display over there, I wouldn't complain.
