I was running my Tuscan single stripe Lionel scale GG1 when I noticed that the front part of the shell was feeling warm and there was a faint electrical smell as well. The engine runs Ok except that it wanted to take off at high speed until I turned off the Odyssey switch. Could something related to the Odyssey control account for the heat and smell?

In any electronic circuit heat is not a good thing, but a burnt smell is almost as big of a no, no as smoke. Smell usually leads to smoke so please stop running it until you talk to the folks at Lionel. It may turn out to be nothing but I doubt it very much. My gut tells me that something is over loading big time.
Followup: With Odyssey turned off no smell and no heat. Engine runs fine. Has anyone had problems with Odyssey like this? I know the steam engines have a circular magnet that cracks into several pieces but I don't know how the Odyssey works on electrics and diesels. Can anyone who services these help me?
The magnets are on can motors only. It would help with the Lionel number your talking about!
The model number is 6-18354. It is from 2003 I believe.
You'll probably have to open it up to see what's going on. Do both pantographs work normally? If the only symptom is it takes off with Odyssey on, I'd be looking at the DCDS or the encoder board on the motor.
"The magnets are on can motors only."
Yes, and only DC can motor locos have Odyssey. Odyssey is not used on AC open-frame motors.
