It was pouring rain when I arrived at Medfield elementary this morning at about 7:30. OGR Member Cappilot was ahead of me, and had set up diagrams on the chalk boards. Another tracker arrived shortly and added his diagram of the layout's control.
First class was 4th graders, and of course they got to run trains. We ended up allowing each child in grades 1-5 to have a turn around the layout with Lion Chief. Another day with NO disasters!
During the "public hours," 11 AM-1 PM, several pre-school child care groups came, along with other community members and home-schooled children.
This pre-schooler appeared uninterested. "Humpf, that's only Lion Chief. I run LEGACY at my Grandpa's house!"
Yep, she does!
With the older classes, Cappilot talked about steam and diesel locomotives. Another Tracker talked about wiring, and pointed to the antenna for the remote operation.
In came the first graders. One young fellow was very proud to lead his class in, and be the first in his class to run a train. (Being related to the Trackmaster does have its privileges....) Interesting, too. No matter how many times kids see the Gateman pop out, it still brings a smile to their faces.
The room did not accommodate Operation Lifesaver well, so the school set them up in the library. all classes then rotated through each area. I was too busy to get photos of them in action, but I was promised links to their photos. They were very appreciative of the opportunity.
One more day tomorrow.
Oh, why did I start out talking about pouring rain? Well, later in the day it cleared beautifully. Thank goodness as an unexpected fire drill was called. We all had to exit behind the kindergarten kids. The Trackers run trains and teach well, but darned if they didn't have some trouble staying in a straight line and not talking!
