I am aware of a very high quality elevated system but it has an equally elevated price. I've seen it on many professional layouts and it's beautiful. I'm looking for something at a more modest price that I can make or assemble myself. Please share your ideas and pictures. Thank you.

Try asking some of the guys from NJHR about theirs. I think it's Silk City. I don't know how it compares to the "equally elevated price".
I just checked their website and saw no mention of it. They used to sell components.

I used the system from custom model trains, rich Roman. They look great, and are a forum sponsor. I previously use the system from bridge boss, affordable and you can buy as a kit and assemble your self.
Here is a good tutorial on how to build your own. It is for a NYC elevated trestle, but with slight modifications you can easily replicate the Chicago loop - http://www.nycmodeltransit.org/ModelEl.htm
