About a year ago I purchased some more Lionel tubular track and graduated trestles in preparation for an elevated track on my current layout. I never really got around to adding it to the layout and I soon forgot that I even had the track and trestles.

Well, yesterday I decided to check it out and see if I could actually do an elevated track. I don't believe I have enough clearance between tracks to use the elevated trestles and it's be pushing the height clearance.

Which brings me here. I want to find out if there's any other way to accomplish this task without having to tear a lot of stuff off the layout.

Below is an overhead photo (well... kinda) of my layout. It is 4 feet wide by 12 feet long. I'd like the elevated track to be elevated between the two loops, but I'm not sure what system or how I could construct supports for the track.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I have a similar problem.  I have used the Lionel graduated elevated stands for my elevated track.  It takes up too much room on my layout so my plan is to cut strips of 1/2" plywood 4" wide and attach the track to the plywood.  Then I will build graduated pillars and place the track on top of the pillars spaced every 18".  That should reduce the ground coverage and provide an attractive more prototypical elevated track.  Not unlike the look of the L in Chicago.

Haven't done it yet.  But, I have seen many pictures of similar elevated track on this forum.  I am finishing the detailing of my layout mounted roadbed and then the elevated track is next.... Hopefully, someone will post pictures of their elevated tracks.

I opened the picture above and got into your photobucket album of the layout.  Looks real nice.  Good detailing. It looks like you are using O27 tubular track with Lionel switches.  I love the durability of O27 tubular track and its profile.  I used Three R Plastics rubber ties then detailed the track with Rustoleum camouflage paint which really made the rail look nice.  I finally gave up on the Lionel switches and replaced them with Gargraves.
