Hey guys...up until a couple weeks ago, I had never heard of the Ellicott City B&O Station before. Must admit, I'm fascinated! In part due to it's history, but in a larger part because of it's overall size and appearance. I would like to model this depot a couple ways, first just exactly as it sits, and then in a smaller version for my On30 layout. But before I do that, I thought I'd ask you guys some questions.

Does anyone know the exact size of the station? Even just the arched door size would give me enough to go on. Also, does anyone have a photo of the "trackside side" of the station? No matter how many photo's I find online, I haven't seen one photo of the side facing the tracks. I'm also very interested to know any and all history I can find out, would anyone know it or have a good source for that information? Not just when it was built, but other details such as who and why decided to build it and what the lower part was used for and how it was built and take the arched door, that was apparently added at some point, I'd love to know when. I even saw one photo that almost looks like there are two sets of tracks inside but I must be imagining that...

Basically anything you can tell me would be a huge help and as much as I love this stuff I'd just love to find out more. Can't believe I had never heard of this station before. I'm clearly not paying close enough attention!

I did order a couple books about Ellicott City but I'm sure they won't contain everything I'd like to know. Would love to see some old time photo's also but not too many of them out there either it seems.

Thanks in advance!

The Ellicott City Station is part of the B&O Railroad Museum ( Baltimore Maryland ) which includes Mt. Clare Station.  Since Mt. Clare station and the Ellicott City Station are the two end points of the first 13 miles of the B&O railway both stations are of historical significance.

Check with the B&O Railroad Museum, the B&O Historical Society, and the Howard County Maryland ( Ellicott City is the county seat for Howard Co. ) Historical Society for information and photos.   Btw - This station also had a turntable in its earliest years to turn locomotives back to Baltimore.

Also check with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

Thanks everyone...
GEF...perfect! That really shows me a ton of detail in the front, something I had none of before...I bet the kids had an awful lot of fun that day!

Jan...you won't believe this but I really hate wasting anyone elses time, and I promise you I "googled" it and "Binged" it 20 different times, and your link most definitely does show me images I haven't seen before, and you know someone else gave me a tip long ago about the Library of Congress, have that on a stickynote on my desktop now, I won't forget to do that next time...very cool. Thanks!

TRUMPTRAIN...I'm not sure how or why but I actually did know about the Mt Clare Station/Roundhouse...I guess I just didn't realize how close I was! What I wouldn't give to come out east and just wonder around for an entire summer sometime. Great tips everyone...plenty of reading ahead of me and looking forward to every minute of it.

Thanks!

Mark - Yes there is lots of railroad history out here in the east.  ( as there is practically everywhere in the U.S. ).  Mt. Clare Station and the Ellicott City station are 13 miles apart.  The famous race between Peter Cooper's Tom Thumb and the horse took place between these two stations.  Interstate 95 passes over the route which is still used by CSXT.

The first U.S. president ( Andrew Jackson ) to ever board and ride a train boarded at the Ellicott City Station, riding the 13 miles to Baltimore's Mt. Clare Station.
