I just talked to the nice folks in Ely, Nevada about their winter photo sessions (Feb 8th and Feb 13th). I am looking forward to taking those photos. They still are taking reservations. I still have not decided whether to take the plane to Vegas or take the train. It will be 40 some hours for the train to Vegas, or 60 plus to Elko. The plane to Elko is 8 hours with two changes, one change for Vegas. Interesting choices.

I always wanted to go to something like that and shoot only vintage cameras. I think those scenes would be natural for b&w from a camera made in the 1930s. Shots from a digital camera just don't look quite right.

That's what Photoshop is for!

I've not found a way to really replicate the look of a 1930s uncoated lens using software, or the ambiance of high silver content film as used then. Shots made from a Heliar or Tessar lens have a sort of glow to them that modern high contrast lenses just can't capture.

They don't seem to mind when I visit. I can take photos any time, in any place. I even made it inside the locomotive shed. They were quite happy to show me the wheel lathes and tell me about the locomotives. I have a good buddy who flies gliders, so when I pick him up for a break, it is a three hour trip from San Diego. A beautiful flight.
But I would not mind taking a train some day.

No, not at all. Film is Film and has a certain look digital cannot capture
FWIW I spent several hours there in Dec 201o shooting the last of the Kodachrome. Unfortunately they were not operating at the time, but still had a great time and got some decent shots.
Went there in November of 2011. Great time! I drove from las Vegas up to Ely which is a real eye opener. I barely made it after about a 5 1/2 hour drive at speeds way over the accepted limit. I'd love to go back for their big event but it's just not possible. Someday, I'm gonna take the opportunity to operate one of their steam engines.
If you have never been to Ely, try to schedule yourself some time. The whole place is like going back some 75 years in time. Well worth the while.

Hwy 93 from LV to Ely is awesome, Scenery that is incredible. long open roads. Plus you can stop in Caliene and check out the UP station. It's no my preferred route when I go from SLC to Vegas, only a few hours more but so worth it
AS for speeding along there, I did think it was cool when the GPS showed 108mph even though the car only showed 105
