Embedded pictures disappear after editing topic

John, I just edited that post (changed a font format, just to make a change of some sort) and updated it. The images didn't change and are still there. I have not seen this behavior myself.

When the images disappeared from the post after your initial edit, were they still showing in the attachment area?

Rich, they were still in the attachment area, and I just deleted the empty boxes with the name in them from the text and then re-embedded the still attached pictures.  Don't know what happened to make them disappear.  FWIW, I use Firefox and Win 10, all updated.

I haven’t had this happen to me personally, but I’ve noticed more threads with missing pictures showing up.  I wonder if that’s related.

Could be, it was odd...  I believe it happens when you edit a topic from what I remember when this was discussed before.

It’s happened to me once or twice.  If you edit the text, the pictures disappear from the body of the post, but stay in the attachments section.

Sounds like that vindicates my computer from the fault.

I don’t know what is causing this, but whatever it is, it’s not something caused by your computers.

That's good to know, now we just have to figure out what it making it happen.

Doing post with multiple photos, sometimes all the photos disappear after an edit, other times just one or two.  At this point, if I have to edit a post with photos, I just delete all the photos in the post (good ones and empty boxes) and re-embed them from the attachments area before re-posting.

Slightly different problem but I have had my "48 Club" badge disappear. I copy it and paste it into my profile..it lasts for a few hours or even a day and then it disappears leaving a huge "Image not Available" placeholder where it used to be in my signature. I've reloaded it several times with the same result and  finally gave up  .

Gerry, you can't paste an image into your signature. It has to be an image hosted on the net somewhere. I fixed it for you.

If any of you want to use the 48 Club logo in your signature, use the Insert Picture tool. Paste this code into the SOURCE window:

That has happened on very rare occasions to me with pictures.

More often it has happened to me when editing a post with a YouTube video embedded. Sometimes the video has to be re-embedded after editing something else in the post.

An update...I have emailed Crowdstack Tech Support on this. We'll let them take a look at this and see what they say about it.

FWIW this exact scenario has happened to me numerous times, but not all the time. That makes it even harder to figure out.

If it's a post with one or two pictures it's no big deal but if it's a picture heavy post I'm afraid to make an edit even a spelling correction because sometimes numerous pics (but not all)  are gone and need to be re-loaded.

The next time this happens to one of you, don't fix the post. Leave it as is with the missing images and send me an alert about it.

Crowdstack Tech Support has not been able to replicate this problem, so they want to see a post with the image links broken.

The pictures have returned in that one, they're no longer missing.

The images still have to be missing in order for Tech Support to see what might be doing this.

Ah, I didn't see that the post was re-edited to fix the missing pictures.

I'll see if I can demonstrate it here and now.  First I'll post and in a minute I'll edit to see what happens.  I edited the text a few times.  The pictures stayed, but in the past they have disappeared.

Just put a few pictures in.  See if it will not re-post pictures after edit.  I'm going to wait a few more minutes.

EDIT:  Went to a couple other topics before coming back.

Second edit:  No change.  Maybe they fixed it?

Here's some info from Crowdstack Tech Support. I don't know if this applies here or not.

"...this is typically caused by users having the posting form open for too long and their session times out (more than an hour) before they submit it. When this happens on new posts, it would usually mean the attachments aren't associated with the post at all, but if they are editing the post, it makes sense that attachments would stay in place (as attachments), but might no longer be embedded..."

Rich, that comment clearly doesn't apply to the issues I described as when I edited the posts that I've seen this in, I posted them right away, easily within a few minutes of starting the edit process.

In the interest of providing another example of pictures missing from an edited reply, although not in exactly the same way as what @gunrunnerjohn describes in this Topic, yesterday I started a different Topic about Account Management Alerts sometimes not notifying me about another member's reply to a followed Topic.

@Rich Melvin Thank you for your note/ edit to the above reply.   I was attempting to be helpful by providing another example of what can cause pictures to go missing for readers who may in the future come across this Topic.  After my error yesterday, I remembered reading a while back about not copying and pasting pics from other forum replies.  I thought that information repeated here in a somewhat related topic might serve as a reminder and/or help others.

I'm happy to completely delete the entire previous post.  Thoughts?

wow... lots of HTML going on when you go into view page source and other debug things.

One thing I noticed on GRJ's missing pic post, while the link to the photo is still there in the code, I could not find the coded direction to create the embed box in which the picture goes "inline"

I went and compared to other topics where the photos are embedded.

I've tried to recreate the issue all manner of ways and so far I can't break it.  Hopefully Crowdstack can find this since it's such a random issue

However, we have a winner this time! From Crowdstack Tech Support a few minutes ago:

In this case, your user found a bug! The file he uploaded had a "(" in the filename. Once it was inserted into the post body, Crowdstack converted to "[", and that broke it. We've filed this as a bug, but don't have an ETA on a fix, as yet. A workaround for now would be just not to use a file name with "(" in it.

As a point of continuing education, it’s not good practice to use punctuation marks in file names. Underlines and dashes are OK, but anything else should not be used in file or folder names.

Thanks Rich, interesting bug.  FWIW, I happen to find it useful to use some special characters for files, makes it easier to describe in the title what it is.  However, I'll keep that in mind for the uploads, that's easy to fix.

Looks like just changing the title in the post was enough to make them happy.

I took one for the team here lol. I knew if I went back and edited this particular post it would break the photo links and it did...all 13 of them ! I didn't even make an actual edit. I hit the edit button, scrolled through the post and hit the "Update Now" button.

Yeah I noticed that.  I just went back and looked at the original photo files which I uploaded and they do all have sequential numbers within parenthesis in them. These are automatically assigned by my computer when I assign the same name to a group of photos. I guess Rich is right, maybe it doesn't like the parenthesis ?

I put the quotes in there, the parenthesis is what trips them up, read Rich's post.  The "" was just to highlight the actual offending character.

Gotcha. Well that's an easy enough fix I guess I'll just rename the files by removing the parenthesis. Interesting how the software allows them and is happy with them on the initial upload but doesn't like them on the edit. And if I re-load them with the parenthesis it takes them. They even seem to sneak by on an edit once in a while and I don't have a problem. The majority of the photos I have uploaded probably have the dreaded ")" and "(" in the name.
