Yep, I use them all the time in names, it's legal everywhere else, just Crowdstack seems to choke on them. One wonders why they're translating a valid name character and screwing themselves up.

However, we have a winner this time! From Crowdstack Tech Support a few minutes ago:
In this case, your user found a bug! The file he uploaded had a "(" in the filename. Once it was inserted into the post body, Crowdstack converted to "[", and that broke it. We've filed this as a bug, but don't have an ETA on a fix, as yet. A workaround for now would be just not to use a file name with "(" in it.
There you go!
As a point of continuing education, it’s not good practice to use punctuation marks in file names. Underlines and dashes are OK, but anything else should not be used in file or folder names.
Thanks
There were many posts with an "X" replacing the photo after myself and others added to or corrected our posts. Surprised it wasn't noticed?
My photos are titled normally. Don't use any characters or odd marks.

It wasn't a matter of being "noticed." You make it sound like we just ignored this.
It took a "digital detective" closely examining hundreds of lines of code and comparing them to find this bug. Do you think you could look at lines of code like this and another set of code lines that are almost exactly the same and compare them to discover where a "(" got changed to a "["?

No, it is not "legal" everywhere else. Try putting a "#" or a "%" into some programming code and see what happens. I once had an entire web site go down for several days, all because of an errant "%" in one line of code. It may work OK in other places, but it is not good user practice to use anything other than dashes and underlines in file names. They are safe characters that are not used anywhere in code.
As for screwing themselves up, they told you it was a BUG and they are going to fix it! Geez.
We have beaten this subject to death and Crowdstack is going to fix the bug. There is nothing more to say.
Here endeth the lesson. Thread closed.
