Yes probably.  You will be better off with a good Adams unit.  My favorite among the doorstop versions is the Jack Raymus version, with full rivet detail.  It is difficult to assemble correctly without a good end mill, but it is gorgeous.

The better idea, if you do not mind plastic, is any of the currently available Lionel, MTH, or Williams versions.  I have seen some of the work Lionel is doing, and it is superb.  I just do not do plastic locomotives.

I really loved and respected Jan, but his kits were generally unsatisfactory.

Opinion.

I have a pair of the Sunset 3rd Rail E7s that came out a couple of years ago.    I find them very nice.   They are a combination of plastic shell with diecast and brass details.    If you are in 2 rail, I would suggest them rather than starting with a 3 rail version and doing conversions and what not.

The Sunset ones have single motor drives powering both trucks.    They run smoother than any of the 2 motor diesels I have.

Oh - I meant to mention them.  They are probably the best of the lot, for a number of reasons, not least of which is you do not have to convert them.  I almost bought a Williams, but did not like the contour at the outside bottom of the windshield.  Had I bought it, it would have been a lost-plastic conversion into silicon bronze.

And I take it back - I do not care for the Lionel windshield either.  I have only seen the PA in person, and it is a work of art, so I just assumed Lionel got it right.  Stick with Sunset.  Or Adams, if you like doorstops - and be aware - some of the Adams stuff is 17/64; other versions, including the all-cast with bats on the sides, are 1/4" scale.
