Still working on refurbishing my Train from early 50's.   Had it (kind of) running the other day.   I would go forward around the track and then I could get it to go reverse.    However, now all of a sudden, I get it to start and goes about 2.5 tracks and then stops when I start it up again it goes in reverse about the same amount of tracks.   Once in a while I can get it to go in reverse around the track but difficult to do forward.   I have a different transformer coming in the mail but not here yet and the old one hasn't really been working that well;  no whistle, no auto reverse, hard to control the speed etc.   Any thoughts on why the forward and than reverse?

Clean all the loco wheels, the rollers and the track with Naphtha. Dirt will break the electrical contact, causing the loco to stop and cycle into reverse.

Get the loco running slowly forward, then push the 'E' unit lever on top of the loco to the opposite position. This will lock the locomotive in the forward position and it won't cycle if it hits some dirty track or bad connections.
