Well I got my kits tonight from Bill at Modern Toy Train Parts and my first task was swapping out my old RS4 Daylight Board from my Lionel #18007 GS2 with the New RS5 Daylight Sound Board and what an IMPROVEMENT in Sounds!! No more static backround noise...

At the first running, I still felt the sounds were too low. I turned up the tiny volume control knob and the sound became a little louder, (this is a plastic tender shell). But then I played with the speaker. Instead of having it face down with the old speaker holes, I secured the speaker to face up and that made an improvement. I never thought about doing that since Lionel almost always had there speakers facing down with Sound of Steam and Railsounds.

With your upgrades, how do you prefer the speaker in your steam tenders, facing up or down?? Just curious, I have about 5 more upgrades to do....but the rest of the tenders have diecast shells, so that should greatly improve the sound levels..

I face them down as a rule, though it really doesn't make much difference.  The biggest improvement in sound will come with a proper baffle on the speaker.  If the tender is sealed, it works pretty well as a baffle, but a proper baffle will be better.

If you have the room in the tender, spray can lids sealed around the speaker back really make a huge difference in the sound quality, and they'll increase the volume as well.  The baffle enhances the bass, which is pretty poor for most little speakers.

The kits came with the baby fat boy speaker (40mm) with plastic baffle. I will probably use this for the rest of my smaller Northern upgrades (Rock Island, Lackawanna and Northern Pacific).

I have a few of the regular size fat boy speakers (50mm) with baffles I bought from Lionel but will probably use them in my Reading and Chessie T1's when I do those upgrades.
