Wondering if anyone has upgraded a Lionel Consolidation steamer (6-28038) of the year 2000 vintage with ERR Cruise. I have done diesels before but never a steamer. Haven't bought this one yet.

Also wondering if this particular model has 4 chuffs per wheel revolution. (I once modified a steamer from 1 to 4 chuffs with a magnet on a driver wheel and a reed switch.)

I've done the ERR upgrades on Atlas and K-Line but only on diesels. I suppose the the process isn't that different on a steamer. Would the components be in the engine or the tender? I have to ascertain if I can do the magnet and reed switch conversion on this baby as I'm a stickler (not necessarily to my credit) about accurate chuff rate. (I use a lot of slow motion). I have three choices for a purchase - one on line, and two in local shops - big price variation from $395 to $500.

Diesels are very easy to convert, steamers typically take a little more work.  You have a few extra things to deal with:

The tether, as usually you have to put some or all of the components in the tender.

The antenna, most of the stuff you'd be converting has metal shells.

The chuff switch.

Those typically run up the time to do the steamer conversion.

Miguelito:  I am wondering if you completed the Consolidation project?  I bought a Lionel PRR consolidation 6-28086 several years ago and it has one chuff per revolution.  I had a lurching problem with the loco so I decided to have ERR installed by a local tech.  He installed the ERR unit and I just got it back a few days ago.  It works fine but the tech did not do the 4 chuff fix.  I am not experienced in the electricals in the locos but I might try the chuff fix myself.  I just need to know where the smoke unit wires are to connect the cherry switch.  I need to find out the best adhesive to mount the cherry switch to the underside of the loco.  Have you changed your loco's chuffs?
