Yes, this exhibition is held by one of the local clubs. It’s about 20 miles from where we live. Mason and I visited last years show.
Absolutely dreadful for the people involved.
A very small amount of comfort can be taken from the fact the perpetrators have been caught.

That's terrible. I really feel for those individuals who's wonderful work was destroyed.

We live in an age where our leaders don't know how to behave, so it is not surprising that young people and the borderline deranged are more likely than ever to act out dishonorably. Just the tenor of the times making things worse than usual, unfortunately. Things like this have always happened in the past, of course. Hopefully these young vandals can be helped to salvage their lives through community service and restitution.
That's insane, those kids had to be there for quite some time to inflict that much damage, they seemingly touched every piece and the loco for example was thrown or beat multiple times, not just one toss on the floor.
Read this yesterday. Seemed like really wimpy punishment for priceless damage, all too typical of this country, too, with a kiss and a wipe. Much better if were breaking up road rocks on a chain gang at 1 pound a day for restitution.
I would have the judge set up a government loan for the full amount and the kids and or their parents can pay it off over the next 20 years. Make the loan be like a student loan here in the US, one you can never default on.
Since the time lost is not recoverable I would get estimates from professional model builders, this way there is a chance the model railroaders will live long enough to enjoy the rebuilt railroads.
What a shame we live in such a world.
These days, for such valuable displays, you might have to keep someone on site 24/7; sad state of affairs.

Agreed! or like in one of the southeast Asia countries where they caught that American vandal spray painting, 50 lashes Plus restitution!
Here is an update. Looks like others are trying to help out!

I hope these donations go to the hard hit members and not just the promoter.
I read about this the morning it happened. So terribly sad!
From the photos I've seen, I haven't seen any layout that actually got hit, it all looks like sales tables.
Did any layouts get damaged?
The loan/payback idea sounds like a good one, and with the under legal age kids, parents should share responsibility.

From the reports I have seen 4 layouts were damaged. One of them was a 2 rail O gauge layout.

No disagreement here: However, the laws in the UK differ a bit than our laws about this in the US.
The most recent Crime Acts say that a parent must be found to be "willfully Negligent" in that they let the youth offender do the crime, and/or knew the youthful offender would commit the crime.
The ages of the children also come into play. 10 and under.... can't be charged. 10-16, charged but as a youth.
17 (in some case) and 18 and above...full adult. Similar to generally written US laws.
That's as far as criminal law is concerned.
Civil law is pretty much like here in the US. Liable or not Liable for compensation.
We set up for our yearly show on a Friday afternoon and always have guard that watches over the vendor's and layout's property over night.

Dang, that's even worse. Bad enough that the vendor tables got damaged, but you can't replace layouts, no more so than you can replace an original painting.
I would recommend that restitution be part of the sentence and take each and every item to be professionally restored.

The damage to the layouts looked pretty severe. I expect to be facing a space crisis, so I've been reading English model railway magazines to see how they handle tight spaces and a lack of a big basement. The Brits use a lot of shadow box/diorama style bench and track work to build their display layouts and the little mothers' blessings (That's sarcasm BTW) look like they did a thorough job wrecking the various set-ups.
This event was a nightmare come true, particularly for those of us who set up our modular/sectional layouts in public venues and leave them there overnight. Thus far we've been lucky in the groups I belong to in Texas: locked doors, video monitors, and night guards help a lot.
And to think we only thought we'd have to worry about people filching our locomotives and rolling stock!
PS A shout-out to Sir Rod Stewart, one of our tribe, who donated over 10,000 British pounds to the afflicted club!
It is one thing to steal because you are starving or down on your luck, but to just be mean, that sucks. The penalty should be to find something they love and destroy it.
Brendan
Just saw the Rod Stewart made a huge donation.
As for the “kids today” comments: kids have been committing senseless vandalism for as long as I’ve been alive. It is horrible and stupid, but it isn’t new.
It's terrible and I feel for those blokes I really do. I know myself it's my biggest fear even though my trains are covered by insurance.
I visit England every year to see my son and family and restitution by the perpetrators ? Good luck with that, you might find, and this is not bad mouthing Britain I love the place but the families could be on welfare and have nothing to give.
Maybe you need a security guard overnight like we do in Australia at most shows, to late I know, I'm going to ask my son to donate some cash to the club. Roo.
Disgusting.
Those punks are lucky that I’m not the judge.
