We live in an age where our leaders don't know how to behave, so it is not surprising that young people and the borderline deranged are more likely than ever to act out dishonorably.  Just the tenor of the times making things worse than usual, unfortunately.  Things like this have always happened in the past, of course. Hopefully these young vandals can be helped to salvage their lives through community service and restitution.

I would have the judge set up a government loan for the full amount and the kids and or their parents can pay it off over the next 20 years. Make the loan be like a student loan here in the US, one you can never default on.

Since the time lost is not recoverable I would get estimates from professional model builders, this way there is a chance the model railroaders will live long enough to enjoy the rebuilt railroads.

What a shame we live in such a world.

Read this yesterday.  Seemed like really wimpy punishment for priceless damage, all too typical of this country, too, with a kiss and a wipe.  Much better if were breaking up road rocks  on a chain gang at 1 pound a day for restitution.

Agreed! or like in one of the southeast Asia countries where they caught that American vandal spray painting, 50 lashes Plus restitution!

The loan/payback idea sounds like a good one, and with the under legal age kids, parents should share responsibility.

No disagreement here: However, the laws in the UK differ a bit than our laws about this in the US.

The most recent Crime Acts say that a parent must be found to be "willfully Negligent" in that they let the youth offender do the crime, and/or knew the youthful offender would commit the crime.

The ages of the children also come into play.   10 and under.... can't be charged.   10-16, charged but as a youth.

17 (in some case) and 18 and above...full adult.  Similar to generally written US laws.

That's as far as criminal law is concerned.

Civil law is pretty much like here in the US.  Liable or not Liable for compensation.

The damage to the layouts looked pretty severe. I expect to be facing a space crisis, so I've been reading English model railway magazines to see how they handle tight spaces and a lack of a big basement. The Brits use a lot of shadow box/diorama style bench and track work to build their display layouts and the little mothers' blessings (That's sarcasm BTW) look like they did a thorough job wrecking the various set-ups.

This event was a nightmare come true, particularly for those of us who set up our modular/sectional layouts in public venues and leave them there overnight. Thus far we've been lucky in the groups I belong to in Texas: locked doors, video monitors, and night guards help a lot.

And to think we only thought we'd have to worry about people filching our locomotives and rolling stock!

PS A shout-out to Sir Rod Stewart, one of our tribe, who donated over 10,000 British pounds to the afflicted club!

It's terrible and I feel for those blokes I really do. I know myself it's my biggest fear even though my trains are covered by insurance.

I visit England every year to see my son and family and restitution by the perpetrators ? Good luck with that, you might find, and this is not bad mouthing Britain I love the place but the families could be on welfare and have nothing to give.

Maybe you need a security guard overnight like we do in Australia at most shows, to late I know, I'm going to ask my son to donate some cash to the club. Roo.
