Can this hurt and engine to mix diffrent brands together? Is it better to replace the batting before doing this?

Yes. I a way, I always do. Locos come with Lionel fliud of whatever, and when I top them up with JT when new, I'm mixing it. But I also used some Lionel when I was out of JT once, adding it in to top up before running, so I mixed it later on.
Nothing bad ever happened.
I use mostly MTH, but a little JT's Eliminator now and then. I tried a few of the different JT scents, but went back to MTH Christmas scent. I actually like the JT Eliminator scent. I have had no problems mixing them.
I've used Lionel, Marx, Bachmann, Suethe without changing batting. Hm-m-m-m, maybe that's why most of my smoke units don't put out much. never mixed fluids in the bottles though.
I've mixed them before, no odd results to report.
I had a bottle that I mixed the smoke fluid samples from Lionel, MTH, and K-Line in, and that's what I used in my locomotives.
I mix JT Megasteam with Lionel's smoke fluid with the thought that perhaps I'm getting the best of both worlds. Can't say I see any noticeable difference either way though.
I have never experienced any problems mixing them up!
No, when I like a scent, I stick with it. Latest and greatest from Mega-Steam is Christmas Berry, best scent I have ever used.
