I took the PDF document I found on this forum and put it in Excel and added a heat map.  Red is bad, white is good, in relation to the number of pieces needed for a distance, thus cost. See attached Excel Doc.

Interesting thought to create this.

Then, I was considering it a little more. If I were building a layout with existing track inventory, some of the dark reds may be a "cool" because those were the only pieces that I had left.

I have just adapted to using the pdf. It's ranked in "heat range" order and I use a top to bottom scanning technique.

I'll try the color code and see if it's faster for me.

Glad you all can use this.  I find it very useful.   Your correct Carl, sometimes dark red is not bad.  For example, using all the half and no road bed 1 3/8 pieces left from O60 and O72 fastrack switches in a tunnel.  This forum has helped me so much.  Felt I should give back!
