Hello all,

I thought i would share this with everyone. I'm in the process of installing full ERR in this K-line semi scale Southern Pacific steamer with a Vanderbilt tender. Every time i do an install like this, i toy around with the antenna reception. Well this time i think i struck gold, the bell caught my eye and i said if i insulate the bell from the rest of the engine i might be able to use it as the antenna. Had no idea if this would work,  I've been testing it out for the past two days, it works flawless. While the engine was running in my basement i went back upstairs with the Legacy remote and i was still getting perfect reception.

Here's the details, ( of course the bell is metal ) I removed the bell from the engine, i then installed a nylon washer between the bell

mount and the boiler shell. Then when reinstalling the bell to the mount and boiler shell, i used a nylon screw. Only thing left to do was solder

a wire from the bell handle and run the wire to the ERR commander.Last thing i did was use the correct black engine paint, and i painted the nylon screw and washer.

THANKS FOR LOOKING,

Alex

That's a great installation. Very innovative. Years ago, Jon Z. used the "rope" that pulls the bell as an antenna, using light gauge wire.

But the remote talks to the base, not to the loco. It does not matter where you are in the house, the remote is talking to the command base or Legacy base.

The base, in turn, talks to the locomotive.

Good morning all,

Thank you all for the nice comments and input.

Roy Boy, yes i agree with you the remote talks to the base but the base was also in the basement. I took the base and moved it to another room  about 10 to 12 feet away from the engine and still had perfect reception. So all around i had great reception.

Pete, I'm tired of trying to insulate the tender or like you said handrails, if you do an upgrade and you have a metal bell with the metal handle, this is the way to go. There's pretty much nothing in the way of the bell to block the signal.

Bob, Yes the bell still rings lol lol

Thanks,

alex
