Hi everyone, I don't know if this question has been answered in the past, but I'm going to ask it anyway.

I have MTH's DCS Remote Control System, the TIU and DCS Remote Control Handheld Unit. I bought the new Lionel CAB-1L for my Legacy system and it is a great extra remote for my Lionel Legacy/TMCC equipped engines. What does MTH offer for an extra remote that would be easy on the wallet and can handle most of the remote commands necessary to operate the engine? I don't need all the commands but I think that Start, Stop, Change Direction, Front and Rear Couplers, Whistle/horn, Bell and Speed Control should be adequate. The 50-1002 (original remote) would be used for any advanced needs. I thank all of you in advance for your replies.

It is DCS System designed for HO, but can run O.  It takes in AC from a Brick and has a DC output with DCS capability, but limited as compared to the TIU.

Getting a spare remote is really the only thing right now.  The starter set remote CDR only addresses 1 address and it wouldn't meet your needs either.   G

Again, I thank all of you that replied. It looks like a DCS Remote Control Handheld Unit 50-1002 is my one and only option. In a perfect world both Lionel and MTH would have one system. The only thing I don't like about the MTH version is its speed control wheel. When I either speed up or slow down and use my thumb rapidly, I think I am changing speeds rapidly but I only move a few mph's. Do all of you encounter this? If I turn it slowly, I register the speeds continuously. I like the big "RED" button on the Lionel's remote because I can speed up, slow down or stop very quickly if an emergency arises.

Ditto!  That thumbwheel is one of the less desirable features, but I can live with it (is there really any other choice? ).  At least the newer remotes have a somewhat improved thumbwheel that is more reliable than the earlier versions.

The new DCS WIFI System is going to apparently have much improved Whistle and Speed Control...

If you're referring to the iPad/smart phone sort of thing, that's probably not for me.  I must admit that I really have little interest in controlling my trains through those kinds of devices.  Fine for other folks, to be sure, but I personally prefer a dedicated remote that's exclusively for train control.

I just bought two thumbwheels, I'm going to upgrade one of my older DCS remotes and see if a new thumbwheel helps.

It won't be a different device, it will just work better if yours is worn and dirty, or has a cracked bracket.  You can also try cleaning it, if you are familiar with taking it apart.  I think others have had success with that.

There is always the direction button to stop an engine in an emergency.  Rapid motion of the throttle won't cause rapid speed change anyway, since speed control is on.   G
