hello, need help. My F/C northern stopped smoking and running. The loco will work and run when the smoke switch is switched to NO smoke. It will run in Conv and remote all sounds work when the smoke switch is set NO smoke. But, when it is switched to smoke the loco is dead only the head light is on. So is the smoke unit bad? If so how or why does it keep the engine from running? If you have had this problem let me know. I'll call Lionel to see what I need to do to get a new smoke unit. Thank you,     Jake

If it is within the 12 mo warranty period, call Lionel, get them to authorize service at their Concord, NC facility, and ship it off. They should check smoke unit and circuit board, and get it operating well.  Not all of their techs are equal. I have had some items returned with same issue still present, thus requiring sending it in again. But all of my returned items (at least 15) have ultimately achieved full functionality, including updated parts to replace original manufacturer equipment that they have learned does not work well.

My mantra is that I love their many of their locomotives and their control system, but you must accept that most items will require a trip for warranty service, so run the locos hard in that first 12 months to expose problems.

Thank you for your replys. I have the loco working now. I removed the shell and reseated the connectors to the smoke unit.. Retested and found  it to be working correctly smoke ok in remote motor running ok in both modes ( remote and Conv. )  I'll put it all together later. Now to remove the shell on one of my Berks. Need to see if I can quiet the gear noise a little. Thank you again

Jake
