Hi everybody. i am new to this forum so i am learning how to navagate it. I am not new to model railroading, but i am new to the lionel f3 2353 i recently got on ebay. It ran ok but had to go over it, during tear down noticed a lot of play in the idler gear. I do not know how to remove it. Do i need a puller? Any help would be great. Thanks.

First off, welcome to the forum! Secondly, glad you are enjoying the golden era of classic postwar Lionel!
Make your self familiar with the library that Olsen's so kindly hosts.
As for removing the idler - it is a press fit into the bore and have been known to be persuaded with cutter pliers or similar tooling for liberation.
Looking at my stash of motors, I did find one with a nylon idler gear and upon inspection, found a small hole on the backside of the motor casting behind the idler shaft and suspect that you may be able to use a punch to remove it from behind...
Just click on the underlined text.
BM, I've know the Library as Olsen's and its original establishment by Olsen's toy store. Now, I think, the site is still known as Olsen's library, but it is owned and maintained by Toy Train Parts.
thanks guys. I will look for a hole on the backside of casting. And i will check out Olsens. I will see what i can find after work tomorrow. Will let you know.
no hole in back of casting. with metal gear,
I've always pried them out with a screwdriver, working them out evenly on both sides, then just tap in a replacement.
i got them out. .Now i got to get new. Metal or nylon? they come out fairly easy. Thanks
