I saw an older scale TMCC Rio Grande PA at the LHS that had an operating rooftop fan. I thought that was a cool feature. The newer scale Legacy PAs no longer have the operating rooftop fans. But is there still a free spinning fan under the rooftop cage?

I have that engine and the spinning fans are a wasted expense. You only see them spinning if you look directly down over the engine. Sort of like opening doors on passenger cars. I would think Lionel has discontinued the spinning doors.

As I recall the Rios were noisy too from the motor turning the fans.
The last run (I got the MP's and PRR's) I think just have the 'it spins if you blow' type of fan. I will check tonite but I think that is what it is now.
I have a couple of engines with the spinning blades, the latest one is a Legacy Train Master. They do get noisy after a time, and it's tough to do anything to quiet them down. I believe the Train Master fans only run with smoke on. I also have a K-Line Train Master with spinning fans.

Also me. They would go with all the swinging whistles, smoking bells and spilling tenders.
It brought the old revolving doors to mind that it seemed every department store of any pretense used to have. Maybe they still do. I don't shop much any more.
The Santa Fe TMCC set I had and sold to Sam had spinning fans. They needed constant TLC because the become very loud. Cool but more of an unwanted PITA really.
