i asked this question on the real trains board a few weeks ago and got surprisingly few responses and none of them were intense.
so here goes on this board...
are there any die hard fans of the Southern Pacific on this here board?

I Am, i have 5 O scale SP Diesels so far in my collection, All of them are done by MTH
Yes, I have been a fan for as long as I car remember. I love the cab forwards and GS series northerns ( I have 2 of each.) There is a 10 wheeler in a park not far from where I live that I played on as a kid. Loved the Vandy tender. I have diesels (F-3 black widow, Baldwin AS616, U-50) also but I really love the steam. I have been looking for a 3 cylinder 2-10-4 for a while but have not found anything I can afford.

I like to throw a couple of SP diesels in my UP locomotive consists. Have one scale MTH SP tunnel motor now with two more on pre order from 2015 Vol.1 All two rail version.

When I was in HO I was modeling EsPee. I had (still have) Cab Forward, GS4, KM diesels etc. I modeled the desert SW.
When I came to O the first thing I bought was a MTH N&W 611 J. So that kinda moved me to the east. (I had moved from So Cal and ridden behind 611 so...)
I have bought a Cab Forward, PA's and GS4 in O now along with Daylight passenger cars....but they run in the east!!!
I am a die easy fan. I lived a few miles from the SP yard as a youth; the sights and sounds are a part of me, deeply embedded in my psyche. However, there are too may other magnificent railroads to die hard for one.
Most certainly. I will not hesitate to say I probably have every contemporary book on the Southern Pacific to date, some doubles and triples. A steam assortment of AC-12, A-3, MK-6, MT-4 and GS-4s. Early diesels F-7s, GP-9s, FM Trainmaster, RSD-4s, Alco S2s,
SW-1 and SW-8. Later diesels GP35, U33C, SD40-2Ts, GP60s, B39-8, B40-8s and C44-9.
GGD Daylight set, Coast Mail train and assorted SP rolling stock. Sunset C-30-1 wooden caboose, C-30-4,5 & 6 bay window cabooses and a few two SSW wide vision cabooses.
Probably forgot a few. Totally lost my mind with the S.P.
I'm a big SP fan. My grandfather was a railroad car inspector in the Roseville Yard and later in the Bayshore Yard (which no longer exists). I grew up a few blocks from the Bayshore Yard and saw SP trains all the time (mostly switch engines and lots of freight cars, plus the commutes). I have many SP trains in my collection, mostly in O Gauge, but also a few in HO and N and recently (at Christmas) got my first S Gauge SP train (an American Flyer docksider set).
I run alot of SP and model it,I have on the layout,
GS 2 in Black
GS 4 in Black
GS 4 in Daylight Color
2-8-0 Consolidation
AC 6 4 -8-8-2 Cab Forward
AC 12 4-8-8-2 Cab Forward
AC 9 2-8-8-4
F 7 A B A in Black Widow

Yes, love the SP!!!
Growing up in San Francisco in the 50's and 60's, the SP was a San Francisco tradition; SP Headquarters and hospital were here. My dad was an SP fan and I inherited it from him. My favorite is the Daylight which I got to see first as the Freedom Train in 1975-76 in San Francisco and Oakland. Once again in 1981 at the Sacramento Railfair.
When I was living in littlerock, Ca. The SP Palmdale Cutoff passed about 1,000 yards from our front door. Trains would rattle the house like an earthquake. I have been a big espee fan for years. My only complaint was growing up that Lionel did not make S.P. Motive power, just a few pieces of rolling stock. I got back into toy trains after a long hiatus and started to buy S.P. Locos and Rolling stock to make up for my deprived childhood. I now have a larger collection of Post-war and modern lionel than I had as a kid. Now I need to find a Black Widow F-3 shell to replace the badly repainted early Amtrak shell my one postwar F-3 wears now.
I have been modeling SP steam since the '60s in HO. This S-12 was made by MB Austin in the 50s. All detail was stripped off and replaced with Cal Scale and Kemtron castings and real glass used in the windows.
If Scott decides to make one in O scale I have it on pre order.

For many years I lived just a few blocks from the roundhouse and shops in El Paso. They were originally built for the El Paso and Southwestern which became Southern Pacific in 1924. I watched the end of SP steam in that area from the Austin
street viaduct.
SP bought EP&SW because they were fierce competitors, at one time threatening to build from Tucson to Los Angeles to compete...even buying land for yards in LA. I suspect it was a bluff...but it worked and SP paid a good price for the property.
Some iconic SP engines were actually built for the EP&SW...some very handsome Mountains some to mind. So yes, I am an SP fan, particularly those parts that were the old EP&SW.
Now Bob Turner can add to this and correct any errors. I won't be offended, Bob.
I know you are the SP and EP&SW expert.
Not die hard, but moderate-strong passing interest, depending on the day of the week...

I live in the SF Bay Area. I am a member of an HO club that depicts the SP route from the Bay Area to Truckee and Reno. The G&O garden railroad runs a lot of SP equipment. I have more SP HO and O gauge equipment than I care to admit.

Yes, probably one of the bigger fans on this forum. Enough of a fan to know that the written alternate abbreviation for SP is Espee, not EsPee! Pshaw, back to school with you, Forrest!
Was born in raised in a town where the SP's mainline went right through the middle of town. Was born too late for steam, but my father, also a big Espee fan, grew up seeing Cab Forwards thundering through town almost daily. So for me it was Scarlet & Grey all the way: hood units, including Geeps, Tunnel Motors, Etc. The Sacramento Northern (WP subsidiary) used to lease the mainline and freight hauls between Sacramento & Chico in the middle of the night until UP bought WP out (Burlington Northern used to run on the SP mainline though here once in a while too), and WP also ran on the other side of the Feather River from my town so I would see that often too. Donner summit was just a hour & a half/two hour road trip to see all that action there.
But when it's all said & done, Espee was and always will be my favorite road.

whatever are you talking about, John?
The SP is in my upper quadrant of notables; their steam power is primo.
Mind you, the SP is no NYC, but, still - the SP comes in ahead of most (always
neck-and-neck with the ATSF).
If I didn't love The Milwaukee Road I would have to be building an SP layout. My first train ride was in 1952 or 53 from Los Angeles to San Francisco on the steam powered Daylight. Lots of steam then. Vicky my wife's dad worked in the Oakland shops as a welder. He would take her to work when she was a little girl and make everyone breakfast cooking with his welding equipment. Don
Yes, definitely - although my credentials are not nearly as good as those of anyone else who has posted above.
However I do have both of Lionel's AC-12 models, including the magical Daylight one.
I am a big fan of the Espee, but I also like several other roads. That said, I have several steam and diesel engines for the SP as well as various passenger and freight cars.
I have on order the Ten Wheel (6-82270 cab #2353) by Lionel. The thing I can't figure out is why they have a coal tender shown with it. My research shows that it had a Vandy tender and was oil fired. I hope they correct this when it is released.
I pounded a lot of spikes for the SP working out of Truckee.
SP and Alaska RR. Would ride my bike out to Kolb and I-10 or to the yard just west of downtown Tucson to watch trains roll through
Yes...Don...I'm SP all the way. And...we had a great time filming. It was fun being your "sound man." One of the greatest steam...and SP experiences of my life! Matt
SP is my favorite standard-gauge RR... I actually modelled a fictional short line owned by the SP when I was into HO scale as a kid.
And yeah, I've seen 4449 plenty of times and ridden behind her three times.
Yes, one of my favorite railroads.
