I have searched for a solution to the problem I am encountering on a 4 x 8 layout I created for my grandson RJ for Christmas using seven switches, including new (1st time out of the box) 031 Remote/Command Switches (using the included controllers) and some older manual switches. Everything works fine except one switch (the 6-81253 at the lower right that sets up the reversing crossover) and it fails in the turnout setting. Any of his two trains short out with heavy sparking when they hit the diagonal outer rail in the center of the turnout. We are running a Pennsylvania 421 RR steam engine and a Union Pacific 4650 (Lionchief sets) and both locos and any car entering suffers the same fate: they short out the switch and the train stops without power. Trains run fine in either direction straight through the switch. The 6-81253 RH switch on the opposite end of this leg works fine, but a train coming into the first mentioned turnout from the cross segment also shorts in the same spot.
I've removed the bottom plate to look for any issues -- both microswitches close properly; all the tabs appear well crimped and the wiring appears undamaged. I am at a loss. Should I solder the bent tabs on the center rail (as GunnerJohn suggested in another Fastrack Shorting Thread)? Any suggestions?
By the way, the "jog" in the center of this crossing segment was not needed as the 031 switches are actually longer than 10", they are 11-3/8" unlike the 036 version which is 10".
