While working on the new layout today I changed a switch lantern to the opposite side. A short, straight wire dropped out and I have no idea where it belongs. I think it is the lantern control rod according to the parts list, but it doesn't really show where it goes. I took another O-72 switch apart and- you guessed it-I have another wire laying on the bench. Can anyone describe to me where this part belongs?

John, if you look at the base of the switch lantern, facing the track, you will see a small hole. There is a matching hole on the outside of the rail. The wire goes between these two points. You can try to bend it in or dismount the lantern assembly and try to hold the wire in place and reassemble it. Have fun.
I did the same thing. I read where the wire is just for decoration to simulate the control rod. It serves no other purpose and is a pain to put back in place. Mine are now stored in the original boxes with the other extra parts.
Thanks guys. I was really puzzled because everything seemed to work ok and it didn't look electrical.
