Summer was quick and I didn't spend much time at the workbench. Until today.
This is a Weaver FEF-3 being converted to an FEF-1 for those that missed the other threads.
The 'pizza cutters' are gone and the prototype correct size NWSL wheels installed. I had to make spacers because the axles were much smaller.
The Sellers Exhaust I ordered from PSC wasn't the right one. The more I compared it to the Krattville book, The Mighty 800, it just wasn't going to do-this is going to be one of the features of this model and has to be perfect/correct. Found a correct OMI one today at the Indy O Scale Show.
This is for Hot Water, I couldn't resist-I can't wait to see that BIG sewer pipe connected!
Finally, I spent some time with the soldering iron tonight. Headlight mounted, UP shield, marker lights and some other details.
I've started working on the pilot-the 2 pieces are now soldered together, air pumps ready to be mounted, shields are cut out and ready to be soldered. Hope to have the front done by next week.
9/14 Update-Pilot Assembly.
Early FEF-1s had the drop out coupler.
I reinforced the pilot mounting to the frame by cutting the flat piece with the 2 holes and bending it down. Soldered to frame and then pilot.
Here's angle view of the flat piece I bent.
Next, I cut this piece from flat brass after making a 'template' from cardboard. Soldered onto pilot. The dark red behind it is body putty filling the 2 holes. Used the American Beauty Resistance Soldering unit for the first time-it's incredible.
The picture screams UP FEF-1!
Hope to mount the air pumps tonight and run some plumbing. Shields are made, just need to mount after pumps. More to come.
It's starting to look like an early FEF-1.
