Working with XPS foam board (green version) in the past six months, but finding it difficult to fill or bond together well.

So far I have had OK luck with Gorilla Glue, but it expands which I don't like.  Research on the issue of gluing or filling XPS foam appears to indicate that not much sticks well to it.  I even tried special duct tape and that peels right off.

So have any of you had luck with:

1.  Gluing boards together face to face and edge to edge

2.  Sealing or taping edge to edge joints

3.  Filling to obtain a smooth surface finish

Thanks,

John

Does it also work as a sandable filler Pat?

Why would you need a filler?…i thought the foam board itself was used as filler,….I’m in no means a layout builder, …AMOF, I paid to have mine done, but I do remember watching Al Judy when he built my hills, mounds, cliff sides, etc. he’d glue a hunk of green foam wherever he needed it, let it dry, then rasp file it to the shape he wanted,….I’m not disputing you needing filler, that’s just how I had seen it done….I remember having to buy 5-6 tubes of PL300 …..

Not sure what XPS foam is. I’m guessing it’s the stuff used in floral arrangements being green. If your applying a heavy dose of ground cover over it. I don’t know why it has to be smooth. It’s terrain. I do get you don’t want to see the gaps in the sections and may need a filler.

I have no experience using this. It came to be long after my scenery was done. Goggle Ground Goop. Plenty of info and videos on it.  You will get plenty of ways to mix it, color it and apply it. It’s a home brewed concoction that modeler Lou Sassi came up with.
Ron’s Trains and Things has a good You Tube video on applying it over foam.

If you embed wire in the bottom of it tape doesn't stick to cover it so thus - a filler (for example).

John - would you explain more what you mean by 'embed wire in the bottom of it'

Typical pink foam I buy from Home Depot is moisture resistant XPS. To fill gaps between the pink foam and foam walls I fill in with plaster cloth and if need be add Scultpamold on top. If you have a really deep hole fill in with brown paper first.
