Hello,

I have 3 diesel locos, all equipped with DCC sounds, which are also compatible with my DC Analog contoller.  I enjoy the blaaaat of the horn, the ding-ding-ding of the bell, and the sounds of the engines as they go through speed changes.

I grew up with steam, and I fondly remember the trains pulled by steam locos, especially those with Walschaert valve gear, which I loved to see in motion!

The problem is, I can't find any 4-6-0,  2-6-0,  2-6-2, or other short-wheelbase locos which have Walschaerts, Whistle, Bell, and Synchronized Chuff as offered by the factory.

Are any of you happy running "mute" O-Scale 2-Rail steam locos?   (My curves are 48" and 43" radius.)

Thanks,

RipTrack

Also, the new MTH PS3 steam engines have DCC with a full menu of sounds.  Just gotta get the scale wheel version.    So, no need to run silent.  Not many yet available but it's getting better with time.

Having said that I've visited a large number of O Scale 2 rail layouts that run "mute" with straight DC and everybody present looked happy.  But they are anything but silent as the wheelsets make a very pleasant prototypical sound -- IMO.

My experience is with 3 Rail MTH PS-2 and TMCC engines. Even with full blown sound capabilities, sometimes it is nice to just shut the sound off and enjoy watching the engine run. So yes, hitting the "mute" button is a good thing.

On another dimension, I buy WbB engines specifically for running on the club modular layout. Inexpensive, durable, great pullers, mutes.

Ah, yes...the good old Signal-to-Noise Ratio!

Reminds me of my Engineering days...

[Personally, I prefer to have my noise at least 20db below my signal...that's 100:1]

About my curves:  ha ha...HA HA!  (I'm not doin' too, bad...210 lbs at 6'2")

Williams Crown Edition were the premium line prior the sale to Bachmann. My WbB engines are definitely "low budget". They typically cost $150 or less. Three of them were plucked off of eBay for $85 (NIB). When running on the club layout for the public, I have learned to leave the good stuff at home.
