I have had a Lionel TMCC 6-28084 Dreyfuss Hudson since it came out sometime around 2002. I just recently acquired a really nice set of MTH 1938 20th Century Ltd. cars, so I found the Hudson, did a quick lube, and put the entire train on my 084 mainline and started her up. Suddenly on around the fourth or fifth time around, the locomotive derailed. And it did it several times in at least two spots on the loop. At times it seemed that the trailing truck caused the problem and other times it appeared to be the pony truck. And, of course it happened in places not easily observable.

I checked the clearances and there seemed to be no problem. Other Hudsons and Mohawks have been working without problem for a few years now so I took the locomotive off and tried to see if anything looked out of place. The pony truck seemed to swivel ok. The trailing truck seemed ok too,  the wires going to the "wireless" tether seemed to be the only thing that could be binding but they really seemed to be in place.

Anyone else have this kind of problem with this or any particular locomotive, with or without explanation?

I have one of these and it has always tracked just fine - which makes me ask: is there something on the track itself that the loco/trucks are sometimes encountering? You stated that the area was not easily observable.

Maybe a dropped screw or detail or coupler thumbtack? Has a piece of track wandered but is not visible? Have you ever actually run this loco much?

Always annoying, these "but I changed nothing" issues.

Loose side rod linkage?  If one of the hex screws is loose, the eccentric may be hitting a tie and pole-vaulting the loco off the track?  Just thinking aloud here.  Depending on how careful you were about making your track joints smooth, you might check to make sure the driving wheels are in gauge.  If they are gauged a litte wide, they might be snagging in a track joint.  That's about all I can think of.
