There have been a lot of threads recently about smoke units. Made me curious. When did Lionel start using fan driven smoke units? I am curious about the year, and the particular engine. I guess that I am also curious about when they completely dropped the old styles.

They haven't completely dropped it. Still used in lower end engines. I don't know the year, but I guess command diesels with smoke was a start. G
My Lionel Big Boy from the 1999 volume 3 catalog has a fan driven smoke unit. I'm not sure if the Allegheny (6-28011) that was in the 1999 volume 2 catalog has a fan driven smoke unit or not.
I also have a Lionel BNSF (6-18253) Dash 9 unit from 1999 that has a fan driven smoke unit. This was the one that included the free TMCC system.
We've had three from the Lionel 2000 catalogs with fans - N&W Class A, EM1, and the PRR T1 Duplex. The EM1 also had Odyssey which worked very well with no 'lurch' that I ever observed. The other two certainly need cruise.
Still have the A and T1. WOuld like to upgrade both of them someday to JDS Ltd's PS2 with added smoke features.
