Got my 6 year old daughter and 1 year old son a Santa's Flyer set for the holidays. She loves setting up and running the trains, he loves watching them and mom likes anything that creates daddy-daughter time. For now we have the oval that came with the set, the figure 8 expansion and some additional straight and curved pieces. I used the free SCARM software to try and create a 5x9 layout. This will be a TOY train set, not a MODEL railroad. I'm not looking for realism but rather play value. My goal was a layout which:
1) Allowed the train to reverse direction since running around in the same direction gets old fast.
2) Had tunnels to add a sense of mystery/excitement.
3) Had plenty of room for operating accessories such as log loaders, dumping cars, etc.
4) A layout that could be built gradually over time as the budget allows (hence the color coding in the plan view)
One question I have for you veterans: is having a switch inside a tunnel a bad idea? I plan to create an access hatch on the backside should something go wrong.
Thoughts? Ideas? I originally had the outer reversing loop as a an elevated dog bone but decided to go with a single level layout for space reasons (when not being played with the layout will rest vertically against the wall)
