I'm practicing making some insulated 3rd rail tracks, using some crappy old O27 tracks to learn on.

I did a quick search for "Fish" on here and saw only one other discussion (3 yrs old) where somebody wanted to know where one can buy fish paper. I know where to buy it, I just hate to place and order for only fish paper and pay six bucks for shipping , not to mention the wait time (it's Sunday!)

So what else works well? I thought of electrical tape, but having just repaired a new piece of 35" O27 track due to the fish paper being punctured by the fold-down metal tab, I'm thinking electrical tape is probably too wimpy. Certain cardboard might work, like maybe that used on the 4-stick butter boxes from Sam's, but that still seems kind of light-weight.

Anybody found an excellent substitute?

I've found that just about any thinner type cardboard works.  I've used the cardboard backing from tablets; I've used matchboxes that I scrounged up; I've used whatever is handy.  Too thick and I find it too hard to shape. They all worked well.

Since the cardboard isn't disturbed once it's in place I'm guessing that's why it's held up so well for me for 20 some years - and I set up and tore down my Christmas layout each year.

Some of the credit card applications, or the ads for Internet and telephone service that come in the mail are printed on heavyweight, plasticized paper. That would work once it was painted black.

Fish paper is still the best, though. Insulating electrical things is what it was designed for.
