Fixing a Bakelite transformer Housing.

Do you a good transformer to copy? If so you can use one of the silicone molding rubbers that Smooth On offers. Many craft stores offer similar products. I have also used 100% silicone household caulk to make molds. Another option is just use a Bondo like automotive body filler. Apply, then sand smooth.

I'd put a piece of tape on the inside as a backing and then put a layer or two of epoxy on top of it (or auto body filler-easier to sand) to the thickness of the case. When dry, sand to the case's contour and paint the section gloss black

I have used John's method using black JB Weld with great success.  It forms nicely without a mold, is very hard and can be sanded smooth to the contours of the case.  I recommend putting a layer of masking tape everywhere you don't want the stuff as it is is very tacky before it starts to cure (by chemical reaction).  Once it is dry you can re-mask the area to only sand the filler and not damage the case around the repair.
