Fixing ps2 sound board?

any ps2 engine can be converted to ps3 the board  your talking  about is replaced with  ps 3/2 board and kit comes  with wire harness's and all things needed  to complete you can purchase the kit on the mth web sight for $200.00 unless you join the company you can then get a discount and buy for $169.00 plus $18.00 shipping.

what is your engine item number 30-              railking  are cheaper then premier ! is it a steam engine or diesel ? sometimes it's just the audio amp goes bad I can replace either one ps2 3 or 5 volt!

send me an email and I'll give you a quote. sometimes your  board can be repaired if it is a ps2 3volt board ps2 5 volt usually can't be repaired . you might try a conventional reset on your engine, sometimes that corrects your issue!

First off, how about the exact MTH model number?

If it's just the sounds, there could be a lot of causes, and many of them are repairable.  Even the 5V PS/2 board sounds are repairable.  Since you mention conventional, could the volume control be turned down?  How about the speaker, it could have been damaged or dead?

It is 30-2464-1  PRR 7609 diesel. Now you are going to make me tell you how bad it was. Have you ever filled a speaker full of smoke fluid? Well I did. If I remember correctly the train made a noise as I shorted something out. It takes the blue battery which I had replaced with a BCR. I did replace the speaker soon after with the correct one. Let's just say I had fluid ever where but the roof.

Well, this is a 3V PS/2, so that's good news.  However, the "shorted something out" suggests you did more than originally suggested.

Figure about $300-$350 to obtain the PS3 upgrade and have someone else install it. Only you can decide if it’s worth upgrading this RailKing Scale SD9 model, but I think that’s pretty spendy for a 14-year-old model that otherwise still runs.

Is it just the sounds that won't work?  You say it will run conventionally, but will it run in DCS mode... just no sounds?

If the latter is true, you could try a Factory Reset.  I've lost all sounds on PS2 engines and a factory reset will bring them back.

I would say as a minimum the audio amp is blown, weather or not a reset will fix the reset remains to b e seen until you try that first then if dcs works again but no sound might just be only the audio amp needs replaced! do a conventional reset 1 bell and 5 whistle in 1/2 second intervals you should hear 2 whistle toots if it works but you wont hear it if a audio amp is blown. however you could then try adding engine after reset and see if board works with dcs again!

Just to clarify what Alan said ... if it’s ps2 5 volt or 3 volt you do not need an upgrade kit... you need a 3/2 stacker board with the proper connectors for either 3 or 5 volt set up ..  and depending on what system it is the speaker would need to be replaced for a 5 volt board 

yes that is correct! if the ps2 5 volt board is being replaced the you would need to change the speaker to 4 ohms and install a 2.4 volt battery because the ps 2 5 volt uses a 8.4 volt battery! everything you need as I said comes with the upgrade kit as mentioned previously!

If it has all functions, but sounds, 99% of the time its the audio amp.  A $2 part that will save a hundred dollar board.  Both PS2 3&5v audio amps are replaceable.

I thought I would update what I did to fix this engine. I bought a new one for $300 from a dealer that had it in stock.

So I decided not to put any money into a repair. The train runs and smokes great in conventional. Since I also run a lot of conventional in addition to DCS and  TMCC/Legacy no bid deal.
