I’m thinking of taking them partially apart to properly repaint the roofs, ends and details. I understand from a little research that there is a good bit of timeline detail color variations, but I’d like to go back red/brown ish on the roofs as oppsed to the later black.  Question is, what is the right red and then I will have to figure out if I want to weather it a little also. The sides are decent, but looks like they have been weathered some already including some fingerprints.  I seen a few sights reference Tuscan red but not sure .... what is the consensus of the board? Also should the underside be red or black? Trucks I think should be black. What are the proper truck model for these? I have a few options from my small pile of Lobaugh parts.  One more question, what couplers will fit the end sills? Kadee’s won’t. Don’t want to cut them up.  I have some Kemtron, scalecraft, and a few others.

First, the sides: Lobaugh had access to colors no longer available (no chromium in paint now).  Treat them with care.

Second - I was a kid once, and saw a lot of SP stuff.  I lived in an EPSW depot for a half year.  My memory says that good old Rustoleum oxide red primer is pretty much correct, and they did not change colors when they painted trucks.

I always wondered why model trains always had black trucks.  The real ones were invariably the same color as the car.

Thanks Bob, I think I just lucked into a couple of sides for another Lobaugh PFE reefer.  Only problem is it is two UP herald sides.  I imagine someone a long time ago thought they should have both sides say SP or UP and so here we are lol.  The guy had these listed as ho......  These match my sides exactly except the car number.  The pre-punched  pin holes are all in exactly the right spot and the color matches exactly.

I also realized I have a set of archbar tender trucks and a set ofthe Symington RB trucks, have figure out what type of car they should be on.

Consider a beat up All Nation body, unless you are going for Lobaugh authenticity.  Lobaugh made their box cars out of brass foil, with joints in the roof.  All Nation stamped them in heavy gauge tinplate steel.  Sturdy!

I do have several Lobaugh reefers and box cars, but I don't go out of my way for them.
