I received my New Haven FL9 tonight and it is a home run. Incredible detailing and graphics and, best of all, what a smooth runner and accelerator right out of the box.

The soundset is railsounds 4.0 but the speaker and enclosure are excellent. Diesel throb is wonderful and the loco seems to run at very prototypical speed.

I previously noted, from photos, that the front coupler was hideous. Not so. It is too long, certainly, but much less of a problem child than I thought it would be. Acceptable, for me.

The fellows inside the loco, well, don't look at them and for sure, do not have the passenger see them. Yikes. Perhaps if the entire passenger list is going to be extras in "Night of the Walking Dead" then maybe.

To SZ and Scott - I totally understand, and again would like to compliment Sunset on their beautiful models and commitment to the 2R guys.  I guess this was just my first introduction to the 2R DCC/DC world.  I have converted half a dozen MTH and Lionel 3R engines to 2R standard DC and have been able to get back quite a bit of the cost by selling the electronic "guts" on Ebay.  To Keystone Ed - I probably won't get to pulling out the QSI stuff for a few weeks.  I was thinking of keeping it in case I ever change my mind about DCC.  I'll PM you and let you know my plans.  Thanks to all for the comments!

My eagerly awaited NH version arrived yeaterday.  Looks great but will need a bit of work to operate. To be clear, I am very greaful that Scott has brought these in but they do need work to make runnable in 2 rail - at least mine does.  Firstly the thrid rail shoe detail hangs too lowon the truck sideframe and shorts across the frogs on every turnout as we have powered frogs on our layout.  The low shoe also causes the engine to rock from side to side when going through turnouts since it is lower than the rail height.  The other issue is the pick-up is of the olde style steam loco version.  One truck for each rail.  I will be installing wipers on the insulated wheels like Atlas, Weaver and MTH does for better pick-up.

Once the 3rd rail shoes are ground down a bit to clear rail height and pick-ups added it should be fine as the engine runs fine on the bench.  I'm guessing that Scott's prototype models were never run through scale turnouts or  crossings.

Thanks 3rd rail for producing such a fine looking model.

Future runs of Sunset diesels starting with the FP-7 will have all wheel pickup.

That is funny and old pictures of the NH attest to that.

Scott already acknowledged my e-mail and a few moments ago, I got a UPS tracking number for my replacement.

You cannot beat service like that!

On a serious note, 3rd Rail will correct that for you.  Just contact them directly and you will have your issue resolved.
