I recently flashed a ps/3/2 board for blue comet. after flashing and beeps tried board in ps 2 test fixture I

1 when prior to chuff should start only heard tsh tsh tsh 6 times then stopped trying to chuff conventional reset was done and factory restore features were reset and board factory reset. tried restarting board again after conventional reset board would not even turn on power up in conventional. after many attempts found out if i shorted out test leads from test fixture would then let me do a conventional reset with 2 whistle toots. after many hours of this PITA EVENTLY got board to work. never ran int this situation any ideas why after 6 attempts for chuff with tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh . a reset finally too!

also, sound file for comet did not sound correctly after above was done many times all worked correctly, never ran inti this problem before!

"6 attempts for chuff with tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh"  ,Real steam engines, when they first begin moving from a dead stop have the cylinder cocks open to prevent hydrolocking the cylinders with condensing steam. Obviously that sound file includes that cylinder cock open sequence when starting from a dead stop.

Here is my PS2 engine showing the effect obviously in the sound file you used.

PS2 Blue Comet Chuff

Also, not shown in that short clip, once the engine has been moved and has played the cylinder cock steam sequence, moves in either direction (forward or reverse) just begin with normal chuffing just like the real engine. It's just when it sits idle not moving for a specific time period, just like the real engine the cylinders would have cooled and thus the engineer would open the cylinder cocks on a moving after an extended pause.

I'm not saying you didn't have a glitch, but from your wording, I just get the impression you were not aware of this sequence or feature of cylinder cocks open sound on first movement after a pause. Not all engine files have it, but just to be aware of what it is and why it's there, and also, how it works, when it kicks in, when it doesn't kick in.

thanks all but this was originally a PS 1 upgrade, and not after the 6 tsh this etc this was no chuff at all and in order to get to attempt chuff tsh I had to do a conventional reset which would enable the tsh 6 times again but still no chuff s 2 whistle toots to restore that feature does not make sense to me!? it took many resets and flashes codes many many times before it would work then worked  perfectly ?

What exact sound file did you use? Should have been in the very first post.

Choices are:

PS2 3V "upgrade" file from the original engine page. https://mthtrains.com/20-3028-1  p04_pp3blucometall040707a_3v.mth

PS2 3V factory engine file from https://mthtrains.com/20-3255-1   p062pp3_p47_831jc_060906afin.mth

PS3 file from a more recent PS3 engine https://mthtrains.com/20-3461-1 p112_p_p47_61__cnj130913af4x.mth

This is a very similar discussion as this one just the other day- what file to use.

https://ogrforum.com/...0#161067874960160710

The answer I took away from that conversation was that the PS3 file could be used and might be the most featured sound set when running on a stacker based board set- a PS1 to PS3 upgrade using a steam upgrade kit (50-1911). However, it was also said that a valid PS2 3V file "should" work- with also saying that the stacker board set should have the correct large smoke steam stacker chain files.

In other words, if using the PS3 file, only use that sound file and ensure you do not use the PS3 chain files from a normal 2 board steam engine on a stacker board set.

Feel free to correct me on any point that I might have gotten wrong.

Can't explain your issue, but as Jon stated some PS-2 5V (Upgrade) sound files would not chuff with the latest engine code in the PS-32.  So you had to go back to an earlier flash code to resolve it.  Usually no problems with PS-3 or PS-2 3V sound files.  But converted PS-2 5V upgrade files may not work.  At the time MTH was going back and correcting Upgrade Sound files to work with latest flash code, but I am sure they did not get them all.

Some folks want the original upgrade sf in a repair.  Of course being a PS-1 any upgrade file would not be anything like the PS-1 sf, I usually chose the PS-3 to give them qw whistle etc...   G
