I have many flatcars different lengths.I have a few that look like they may be 30 ft.They look like they may I been part of a train set. From time to time I change different loads on them. Some time I put machines such as bulldozers or lumber, steel beams, pipes and even tractors.I have come to like flat cars very much.On my freight trains they give more of a mix.So what I want to know is do you like flatcars with loads in your freight trains?

You must have some mighty wide curves to get a 30 ft flat car to pass.-KIDDING...
I love flat cars with loads. My layout is heavy industrial. Large scale equipment is needed to build
infrastructure. Specialized equipment looks great all chained down on flat cars. Gondolas as well.
It is fun to create custom loads from scratch. You can get chain that matches scale at craft stores.

I, too, like flat cars. They are very versatile. It is easy to switch out loads. I even like to run them empty once in a while.
Here is a Menards flat that I made a pipe load for.

scale rail posted:I like the longer length of the old K-line flats. I think Lionel may still make them. Don't like the old short ones.
Lionel has been making excellent long scale flatcars for quite a number of years now, PS-4 cars with real wood decks, 14 3/4 inches long. These are Lionel car designs - not remakes of the old K-Line cars.
I set up the Tiger to act as a Promotion to Buy savings Bonds during WWII,I pair it up with the new Lionel pullmans promoting join the Army.

My brother-in-law was in the Battle of the Bulge. There was ONLY two things he ever said/told me about the engagement. "It was D#%* Cold"! He received server frostbite of his feet. Some dead and dying tissue had to be cut away. Until the day he passed had to have special shoes made from the VA. The other thing was he would never forget the sound made by the approach of a Tiger tank!
He severed in the 34th Infantry, 87th Infantry Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

I like to put military loads on flat cars as well. About half my main yard is flats with either tanks or support vehicles. I would estimate about thirty cars- and building more every day! Here are a couple of random shots that I could find easily. Enjoy!
Panzer III L in Afrika Korps scheme and Panzer II B in German Army gray for 1940 France campaign. Both Tamiya kits, Weaver 50' flat.
Two German Protze trucks. Both Tamiya kits, Lionel PS-4 flat.
Russian KV-2 captured and modified by the Germans, winter '41 scheme. Hobby Boss kit, Weaver 50' flat.

I love flat cars. Lot's of variety to place as loads. I made this one from a TOFC when I discovered the trailer was too tall to clear my upper level track. The cables are thin picture hanging wire.
This is an old non-de script Lionel flat with a pipe load. The pipe is steel and is enough weight to make a track cleaner out of the car
The Menards flats with loads are nice too

Here is a video of a BNSF Military train on YouTube. It is taken from a high angle that allows you to see the details on the flatcars:

This is quite heavy. The cribbing has since been replaced but I still have not covered the commutators.
