I got the new Menard's Alaska flat car with the Coast Guard helicopter load on it.
The car came with these stakes. Would it be prototypical to use them like this? What types of loads would require stakes?

Not sure but I one would doubt they would transport a helo on a train car but if they did it would of been tied down and no the stakes would not of been there would be my thoughts probably big tarps if anything other than tiedowns
Chains and tie down would be more appropriate on such a load. Glad Menards used the scale flatcar, really nice and would make a nice compliment to a military train enjoy
I'l second the chains and tie-downs, and I'll add that the rotors would probably be removed for transport. On the plus side you can pull out all the stakes and use them on other cars for other loads
