I am going to start a new thread on this as we really have quite the mix of posts and cross posts covering a wide range of topics...maybe we can use this to talk specifics about the GP7...

The question came up about weather or not the GP7 will have smoke, it was reported on one of the S Guage Facebook groups, that a conversations was had with Ryan K from Lionel at the "big E meet" about this issue and he advised that due to space restrictions in the body that the electronics and the speaker would not allow for a smoke unit. There was no report on if the question about the tall trucks was asked.  Also the Docksider will not have smoke for the same reason.

It's not like the original Gilbert trucks were any great shakes.  It took me a loooooong time to come to terms with them:

The jury's out on the new trucks as far as as I'm concerned.  As I've mentioned before, these new trucks appear to be adaptive reuse of the Baldwin switcher trucks (which are also too short) and one can't always trust Lionel catalog illustrations.

I'm going to wait to see the actual truck.  Besides, the Flyer GP7 still has a 1950's level of detail with big old clunky handrails, so the new truck may fit in the overall look just fine.

Nice Alco picture. I ordered the PRR Legacy PA/PA set out of the 2017 catalog. Definitely needs the included smoke unit! I also ordered a UP GP7 and the PRR Docksider set. Those 2 will not have smoke. Will have to see if Carl Tuveson figures out a way to add a smoke unit. When these arrive I will have 4 FlyerChief engines, all with Bluetooth. I much prefer the Legacy engines but the new LionChief App for the iPhone allows operating all engines with one handheld device.

The Lionchief app will operate some Flyerchief locos through bluetooth technology. The recent Northerns and the yet to be released GP7's. Pretty sure there's a separate app for Legacy which is not free and additional wireless equipment to add to your Legacy system (also costs $). It uses your home wireless network if you have one.

Dave, I can work this way. I have the Lionel Layout Control System with the WiFi device. The iPhone is running the iCab App and connected to the LCS WiFi network. The iPhone is also running the Bluetooth App for the FlyerChief engine. Just toggle between the two open Apps on the phone to control any engine on a powered track on the layout.

I have only done this for a few minutes after I received my NYC Northern on Thursday.  It is possible some glitches could show up with more running time.

Speculation on upcoming products is pointless.  Smoke or no smoke?  Baldwin trucks?  Lionel's track record on the veracity of illustrations is well known.  Until they are in people's hands, we just can't know for sure.  If there is a different truck, fine.  If not, that's the way their previous Geeps are, being in the same mold (literally) as their Gilbert ancestors.  Either way is fine with me.  I have a couple of the newer Geeps and they're some of the best runners I have.  Very little in the way of fancy sparky stuff.  As to the motor arrangement, I can't see Lionel straying from the basic concept of their Commemorative one:

This one runs nicely, but the bell feature crapped out the first week I had it.

Jerry, I had one of those AF Commemorative Geeps and never new it had a bell!

It's long gone now to Ebayland. It ran well too. One problem I had was once the pickup roller must have gotten snagged on a piece of bad track at a train show and was never found. I had a replacement installed and all was well. I hope Lionel manages to make an all-wheel pickup on the new trucks and avoid those spring loaded pickup rollers on the new FlyerChief Geeps.

OOOPS, Sorry,  I meant the C&O Geep.  The Commemorative one never had it, you're right.  But both still run nicely.  I have a whole train of the matching cars too.  Made a couple of scalers crazy when I ran it on my club's layout.
