Reminds me of my days in architectural school and the first 15 years of my architectural career.  We built nearly all our models out of foam core.  Of course we never finished them, but foam core is a wonderful modeling too.  Precise, easy to put together and stable as long as you have enough angles to keep it rigid. 

 

They also make a product called gator board that has high strength foam in the core and has craft paper facing which can make for a nice finished model all on it's own. 

 

Great stuff.  I love the modeling tips I've seen in this thread for finishing a model.
