I thought I would share the recent uncoverings of CP 5361. CP 5361 is a 2-8-2 Mike up in Depew New York. Her owner is asking 100K or she will be scrapped on site. A few forum members over on RYPN have been trying to figure out how to save her. (Thanks for the efforts Al Crisp at RYPN!) However, recently, the plan has fallen through and the owner claimed he will start scrapping next month. Sadly the railfan community has no say in what happens to these historic beasts, but I wish we did in this situation. I just thought that I would share this story from RYPN. http://www.rypn.org/forums/vie....php?f=1&t=41025

This situation reminds me of that poor B&LE 2-10-4 stranded in Pennsylvania, because the owner (a Mr. Glen Campbell) thinks his locomotive is worth massive dollars, which it isn't.

Hot Water, correct me if Im wrong,......But at today's scrap prices (which are down in the dirt) Im not seeing 100K in scrap? do you? ….I m thinking 20-25 tops?....maybe Im wrong?

Correct. Not to mention that many components of a steam locomotive are NOT "good scrap", i.e. cast iron, and are thus valueless. Then there is all the gas supplies required to "cut up" the whole locomotive, so I would be surprised if the Scrapper would actually clear a profit much over $20 K.

Agreed, and do steam engines also have asbestos in them ?

The lagging has been removed from this locomotive, so there is no asbestos to worry about.  Asbestos hasn't been used for decades on preserved, operating steam locomotives.

Well I have sent an email to Canadian Pacific in regards to the plight of the locomotive and also locally here in Calgary.

They are probably aware according to what I have read on the RYPN site.

I don’t think the local railfan community is even aware (I didn’t until a few days ago)

Email CP to at least show the concern for it being cut up for scrap and encourage them to assist some how 637F7435-CA5E-4103-BBA4-434FE8030BAAEAB278E8-1E65-498E-9257-EC2862126E6C

Wonder how this burly Mike found it's way to Depew, NY?  It is fairly close to Buffalo and Ft. Erie with ample Canadian connections. But  yet, it is in the US, not Canada, and beyond Canadian Pacific's territory.

CP  has trackage rights in New York and has for many years. Crossing at Niagara Falls and south and east through Buffalo on what is now Norfolk Southern tracks.

It is a spectacular example of Chief Mechanical Engineer William Winterrowd design. He held this position with the CPR from 1918-1923 before he left to join Lima locomotive works as VP in 1923-38 during the conception and development of the “Super Power” era.

I am glad it is safe but wish it were coming back to Canada, some how .

I remember seeing 5361 down at John street roundhouse back in the early 1970s and had many an opportunity to go into the cab and look around
