I thought I would share the recent uncoverings of CP 5361. CP 5361 is a 2-8-2 Mike up in Depew New York. Her owner is asking 100K or she will be scrapped on site. A few forum members over on RYPN have been trying to figure out how to save her. (Thanks for the efforts Al Crisp at RYPN!) However, recently, the plan has fallen through and the owner claimed he will start scrapping next month. Sadly the railfan community has no say in what happens to these historic beasts, but I wish we did in this situation. I just thought that I would share this story from RYPN. http://www.rypn.org/forums/vie....php?f=1&t=41025

This situation reminds me of that poor B&LE 2-10-4 stranded in Pennsylvania, because the owner (a Mr. Glen Campbell) thinks his locomotive is worth massive dollars, which it isn't.
I bet it unfortunately comes down to money. It is probably worth more as scrap or at least, to get the money faster and easier?
Lets buy it Albert from Alberta . I hope you have a few more dollars than I do. Gregg from Ontario.

Hot Water, correct me if Im wrong,......But at today's scrap prices (which are down in the dirt) Im not seeing 100K in scrap? do you? ….I m thinking 20-25 tops?....maybe Im wrong?

Correct. Not to mention that many components of a steam locomotive are NOT "good scrap", i.e. cast iron, and are thus valueless. Then there is all the gas supplies required to "cut up" the whole locomotive, so I would be surprised if the Scrapper would actually clear a profit much over $20 K.
Wow, that is much less than I would have thought it would be worth in scrap. Maybe hope that it will have time?
that would cool to have on the property, if the owner would sell it at scrap value.....getting it moved might be more than the cost of locomotive....I wonder if I can get an Uber driver to swing on down and pick her up!...

Agreed, and do steam engines also have asbestos in them ?
Nooooo! I love this particular loco. I believe its the only example of a P2e Mike in existence. I hope the regional railway museums in Canada are aware of this .
It’s a do or die situation unfortunately

wish I won the lottery
just sayin
Ken Jones of the Niagara Railway Museum has offered her a place to stay if she can be rescued but they are unable to contribute towards the purchase or the cost to move her. Still - one hurdle cleared! Trying to get some media attention going. She's not scrap yet.

The lagging has been removed from this locomotive, so there is no asbestos to worry about. Asbestos hasn't been used for decades on preserved, operating steam locomotives.

I’m sure glad to see that 5361 hasn’t been scrapped yet. Hopefully funding and a home will be in the near future.
I know of a Ken Jones that lives in Edmonton (or did until recently), not sure if its the same Gentleman? He is a big CNR guy

Is contact information available for the owner of the locomotive ?
Any documentation in regards to it being for sale and intact at this time?
Just asking for a friend lol
Al
The locomotive has supposedly until December 15th or 16th go to the forum above for the current info. I would contact Al Crisp at RYPN for contacts as he has been talking to the owner.
I wonder even 5 to 10k.
I saw two former wreck cranes, and I mean massive ones ,sell during the big dollar days of scrap, only sale for 5k each.
They were N&W and Southern cranes that sat on the wreck track in Williamson, WV.
Well I have sent an email to Canadian Pacific in regards to the plight of the locomotive and also locally here in Calgary.
They are probably aware according to what I have read on the RYPN site.
I don’t think the local railfan community is even aware (I didn’t until a few days ago)
Email CP to at least show the concern for it being cut up for scrap and encourage them to assist some how

It sounds like the locomotive will NOT be scrapped and negotiations are continuing for a sale(according to RYPN site)
There is a chance that the locomotive may come back to Canada. But we shall see
Al
Wonder if the Age or Steam museum folks are aware of this? They’re most likely better equipped to have cash available than most other organizations.
It said over on RPN that Jerry Joe had looked at her years ago but the price was too steep.
Greetings All
Has anyone have an update on this continuing saga?
Al
Last that was said was that the locomotive was sold. A few groups were involved I believe, but the locomotive is safe for now...
It has been sold to a new owner and there are no plans to move it at least for a year.
Do we know if it will be staying in the US or coming back to Canada?
Al
Anything could happen in the long term, but the short and mid-term plan is to stay in the US unless there are parties in Canada that are eager to have it.
Wonder how this burly Mike found it's way to Depew, NY? It is fairly close to Buffalo and Ft. Erie with ample Canadian connections. But yet, it is in the US, not Canada, and beyond Canadian Pacific's territory.

CP has trackage rights in New York and has for many years. Crossing at Niagara Falls and south and east through Buffalo on what is now Norfolk Southern tracks.

Additional Canadian equipment available:
It is a spectacular example of Chief Mechanical Engineer William Winterrowd design. He held this position with the CPR from 1918-1923 before he left to join Lima locomotive works as VP in 1923-38 during the conception and development of the “Super Power” era.
I am glad it is safe but wish it were coming back to Canada, some how .
I remember seeing 5361 down at John street roundhouse back in the early 1970s and had many an opportunity to go into the cab and look around
Al
Wonder if Age of Steam in Baltic, OH could negotiate a deal to save this locomotive?
It is already saved and under new private ownership.
