We were down in Fort Benning Georgia this weekend and had an opportunity to go to the National Infantry Museum. In the back of the museum I noticed a train on display. Turned out that between 1919 and 1947 the Fort Benning Light Railway was used to transport troops and supplies around the 182,000 acre facility. The railroad was a 60 cm narrow gauge railway.

At it's high point in 1923, there were 20 of these little locomotives running on 27 miles of track around the facility. There was even an engine house and yard on site. It's nice to see that they were able to save one of the engines and cars for display.

But the real reason we were at Fort Benning was to pick up our son Brian who graduated from the Army National Guard as an Infantryman. Next up is airborne school. It was a great weekend. We are very proud of him.

Flash, There where tracks near the main gate going up Ft' Benning road even up to 2000, as this is the new Infantry museum which opened up in 2009.  Ft. Benning is in a big building boom now and for the past 5 or 6 years.  Roomer has it, when the old museum moved some tapes may have been misplaced about the Benning railway, but you still can see them on U-tube.  Have a great day, Bruce
