I heard the sad news that Frank Titman has passed away. He was well known, not only by his fellow S scalers, but within the entire model railroading hobby. He was instumental in preserving S scale during the rough times we had in the 60's and 70's when the scale came close to perishing.

He edited the S Gauge Herald and manufactured structure and car kits under the Lehigh Valley Models label. I put an article about the kits on my website: http://royhoffman.com/pwrr/lvm.html

The kits were proof of Franks genius. I was privileged to know him through our club, the Lehigh Valley S Gaugers. He was a humble man who always had kind words and encouragement to his compatriots. He will be missed.

I first "met" Frank when I corresponded to him as an 8 year old who had a question about an article in S GAUGE HERALD. Frank took the time to write a cogent and inspiring letter to me.

I wrote to him several more times in the pre-internet era when I had questions about assembling his building and rolling stock kits and he answered my "stupid" questions promptly and gave me lots of helpful hints. I always thought of those models as having a little bit of Frank on my layout, and they really helped me perfect my modeling skills.

Most inspriational were his articles about conversions of the "lowly" AF Atlantics into respectable scale locomotives and of basket case AF offset Hoppers into ribsided hoppers (which were, at the time, unavailable in S). Frank showed all of us how we could, without too much difficulty, make a real model railroad out of the dearth of what was available in S Gauge in the 1970's.

I will truly miss him.
