Earlier this week, I picked up a freebie beater ZW transformer from a friend that is partner in a local shop.  A gentlement(not a normal customer) found it and an RW while cleaning out a basement.   There was a rust water mark all the way around the case about inch high and the metal base plate was rusty.  The LH handle was way out of position(off was where full throttle would normaly be).   Once home, the inside of the case had no evidence of water damage, just typical corrosion from being in a damp basement for years.  The cord was good, so I pulled and reattached the handle in the correct position, inner handle rollers are nearly new, outer handles are both worn but will work till I get parts ordered.   You cannot even tell its on(indicator light is burnt out for the moment as well), unless you put your ear on the case.  Works great, both rectifiers work as well.  Cleaned up fairly nice as well.  Pics are post clean up.   Then I have been looking for some postwar Lionel for my $100 xmas money.  Had be hoping to get some of my HO stuff sold and get a nice 726 Berkshire, but not having luck getting stuff sold, so I was stuck at $100.   Found a milk crate with a 671 Turbine and the big 12 wheel PRR streamlined tender set with an RW on Facebook Marketplace, asking price was $175.   I shot him a cash offer of what I had to spend and explained that it would all need to be cleaned and serviced to run again.  He accepted and even drove to the north side of Indianapolis to meet me, saving me fuel and stress of traffic on the loop.  Already got the tender rewired and whistling well, Turbine runs, probably first time in decades, but is down till tomorrow, one of the inserts for the side rod screws was loose in the wheel casting, so it just got JB welded back in place.  Smoke unit is dead, wire element is trashed, plunger is stuck with residue, so I just removed it for now.  I will get a new element at the next show or online, along with a new headlight bulb.   She lacks the nickel rims, but has the extra ballest weight infront of the E unit.  Also in the crate is an early milk car(alum doors), its beat to death, one truck is destroyed but I can fix it, a black LV hopper, a brown, lighted SP type caboose with both tool boxes and a smoke stack(busted off), lots of O gauge track, O gauge operating track for the milk car with the buttons(needs new wires) and the RW with a really really bad cord but looks good otherwise.    My friend and I stopped at Mr Muffins on the way home to see the progress on his new layout and browse the shop before coming home before the snow storm started.     Cheers   Mike the Aspie.  Resized_20171229_141055Resized_20171229_140935

I managed to ID the set, its a 2141ws from 1949.  Made for 2 year, the 48 version has the coil couplers and the 49 has the magnetic couplers.  I have everything other than boxes that make up the set.  And from online reading, the RW was a common transformer to be sold to the buyer of the new O gauge set.  I will have to see if I can save the milk car, the body looks horrible.  The inner workings look ok, and the destroyed truck is an easy replacement.  Even the alum doors are decent despite how bad the body looks.  Will mess with it today, gonna be way to cold to be outdoors, so it will be a "train day" today.     Mike the Aspie
