The Thomas the Tank Engine story that John Oliver pokes fun of and parodies is based on "The Sad Story of Henry," the third story in the Rev. W. Awdry's first book of the Railway Series, The Three Railway Engines. Thomas was introduced in the second book of the series, Thomas the Tank Engine.

While there is much to enjoy about the Railway Series, they are dated and don't hold up as well as other children's literature. They come across as paternalistic and encourage subservience to superiors.

WBC, that was well worth the 27 minutes! Thanks for posting. I never heard of John Oliver, but next, I'll be watching his Truck video. That ought to be interesting....

John Oliver is a British, no surprise there, comedian. In the States he was a correspondent on the Daily Show with John Stewart where he was popular.  After that he started Last Week Tonight on one of the premium movie channels.
