I had to send my new Flyer Chief northern back to Lionel because the smoke unit fan is no longer working and the rear coupler was not working since day one. Par for the course. However this past weekend at the Timonium Train show I picked up a 336 Northern with large motor for $65.00. Could not believe it! It was dirty and the wires were disconnected between the loco and tender. (this is a permanent wired loco without the plug disconnect). also it was missing the rear truck on the loco and the two number boards. Got the number boards today and waiting on the rear trucks. Works great, still smokes and the Whistle works. 60 year old U.S. technology still works but new China made smoke motors don't!

What a steal on the 336. Congrats on finding that gem.
I too some some good deals on Flyer at Timonium although I'd have to say yours was probably the best. There were five SP streamlined passenger cars for $150, a large motor 326 in what appeared to be VG condition for $150, and several nice looking 31X, 29X, and 28X Pacifics for $70-90. Was it just that people wanted to unload, or are prices on everything but the most rare Flyer coming down?
I believe that the prices peaked about 10 years ago and have been going down since then, More on common item than on rarer items, but all have shown a decline. I don't see as many bargains at York however IMHO too many are trying to finance their retirement by selling trains. Trains are expensive and younger individuals today rather spend their money on other pursuits. At least my son and I have built his layout together and he is in his 30's. We have a wonderful time doing it together!
