I received an e-mail yesterday, December 9th, from the Coalition for Sustainable Rail titled "On this day in 1937 . . . " about the historical run made by ATSF Hudson 3461 on December 9th, 1937.  It is an interesting story about a steam power and the 3460 class in particular.  Here is a link to the article:

Yeah.  I understand, completely, how and why the steam-propoent faction of the industry hung on as long as they did, and they certainly created some splendid locomotives in the Big ATSF Northerns, UP big steam and FEFs, NYC J3, N&W Js and big final PRR steam locos, etc.  

 

Still, I think most of those folks could see the handwriting on the wall, particularly after the war.  What I never have understood, however, is the big gas turbine locos that, in particular GE built: why people didn't realize that was a dead end even before they were put in service, I'll never know.   Some very good talent was tied up in those that could have gone to more useful loco design.  But anyway . . .
