I took my chances and bought RailKing Steam Engine off of Ebay.  The engine has no run time and the owner said it only has been on display.  It is Protosounds 2 with 3 volt battery which I replaced with BCR2 battery.  Everything works fine accept the front marker lights and the tender marker lights don't work.  However, the headlight, tender backup light and cab lights all work.

I have done a engine reset and factory reset on DCS remote, but they still don't come on.  I have tried the softkeys on the DCS remote too for the marker lights and cab lights.  What could be the possible cause?  Do the marker lights need to be replaced or could it be a bigger problem with the board itself?

Ken,

Since you've ruled out a reset and an incorrect sound file (you have an LMK soft key for the marker lights), there only are a few possible reasons why the marker lights aren't working:

  • The connector to the PS2 board for the marker light may be disconnected, or there may be some other break in the wire path from the PS2 board to the marker LEDs
  • The marker LEDs may be defective. This is rare, however, I've seen it first-hand
  • The sound file could be the correct one, however, it could still be defective. Contact MTH to learn if there's a newer sound file available
  • The marker lights could be wired incorrectly, i.e., connected to the wrong pins on the PS2 board
  • The PS2 board may be defective.

Thanks for the Reply.  After I wrote my post, I thought about what I could do to further figure out the problem.  I took the Mark Lights out of one my MTH engines and swapped them out into the new engine. The marker lights from my other engine worked in the new engine; therefore, they are defective at least on the tender.   I still need to try the engine marker lights to see if they are defective too.  I guess I will need to call MTH for new marker lights...yellow and red if they have them available.  I saw some posts from earlier this year that they were out of them.

Ken

Not in the tender, and since the CAB light works it is not a high probability.

Did you try the new engine tender markers in the old engine?  Could be an issue with a pin pushing out of the female 2 pin connector.  At least you know the rear marker circuit on the PS-2 board is good.

Make sure the 8 pin connector is pushed in all the way on the PS-2 board.  If MUX board is used in this engine make sure connector pushed in all the way in tender.

Then test.  If still no go with engine markers, you need to pull the shell and inspect.  G

Yes, I did put the new engine tender marker lights in my old engine.  They did not work in my old engine.  I briefly looked at the connections and they appeared all were firmly in place in the tender, but I will check again.  I am not familiar with the MUX board.  This engine was manufactured around 2007. I probably can post picture later today to see if you can tell me if there is one or if you can describe it for me?

Also later today I will pull off the shell of the engine and look at the front marker lights.

Thanks  Ken

I call my LHS yesterday and they had some MTH marker lights in stock.  I picked them up yesterday and installed them today.  The front marker lights were defective too as the new ones worked.  I am thankful it was not anything more than bad marker lights.

I don't like buying engines on ebay knowing the risk involved with problems, but I have been keeping my eye open for this engine for about year and I could not find it anywhere...so I went ahead and purchased it.

Thanks for everyone's input.
